This proves that anyone can win at any given time. Someone had something mentioned about Bourbon winning 2A in '97, Simon Kenton made the title game two years ago as a #4 eventhough they lost; same year Bullitt East made 4A title as a lower seed and nearly beat Bell County in what was supposed to be a major blowout. Anything can happen. I can understand the argument that all teams making the playoffs with the current set-up of the system are not good, but others are and have proven that they were deserving of making the post-season.

And SK did have a good playoff run, but were absolutely obliteratred in the finals.............the Pioneers had the biggest benefit of playing in the opposite bracket from the Shamrocks.

 

They did benefit from the bracket but they also knocked off two #1 seeded teams.

This is a no brainer if only the KHSAA would use common sense.

The problem I have is I paid $6 to watch a 55-0 game.

 

I'd also bet that the 4 vs 1 wins probably come form "usual" districts because they are better across the board.

I have never understood the argument that simply because a #4 seed defeats a #1 seed how that shows the current playoff format is correct? What am I missing here? Good teams (even at a #4 seed) are not always supposed to make the playoffs... for one, it should be a challenge and honor to even make it.

 

I guess the rationale is that because there are some really weak districts, other districts deserve the benefit of getting in there stronger teams to even things out? If that is the case I wish the state would come up with an alternative method of selecting teams or have the region somehow seeded.

The differences in opinion on the 6 classes (and the number of teams making it into the playoffs) simply boils down to a difference in philosophy about "making it" to the playoffs. You and others think that it should be a challenge and honor. I understand that thinking because it was that way for a long, long time. But I don't share that sentiment. I view it as simply a second season as is the case in basketball, baseball, volleyball etc. Those who disagree with me then respond with such makes the regular season meaningless.

 

I strongly disagree with the thinking that basically allowing everyone into the playoffs makes the regular season games meaningless to the coaches and players (frankly I couldn't give a hoot in Hades what the fans think is meaningless). First, the regular season district games are extremely important because district seeding is extremely important come playoff time. What team, what coach doesn't want to be able to play the first two playoff games (and maybe a third) at home? None, so those regular season district games are critical. Furthermore, what team, what coach doesn't go onto the field at any time, in any game, wanting to win? None. What team, what coach doesn't want to go undefeated in the regular season? None. Conversely, what team, what coach doesn't care at all about winning a game in the regular season because they will automatically qualify for the playoffs? Again none.

 

A win by a 4 seed over a 1 seed is no more of an accurate barometer that the current format is right, than a blow out win by a 1 seed over a 4 seed is an accurate barometer that the current format is wrong. If it was up to me and we could logistically let every team in the football playoffs instead of just the top 4 from each district, I'd be all in favor of it. So what if there are some blow outs. It's seniors getting to play at least one more game before their high school career ends; its players that will return getting at least one more week of practice to get ready for next year and one more game under their belt. It's kids getting to participate in the game they work their tails off to play at least one more week. If I have to endure a boring blowout, so what. The game is for the kids participating; not the fans watching.

Sorry and I hope I'm not offending you with my following comments, but the thinking that a fan somehow feels cheated when they pay $6 and have to watch a 55-0 game just pops my cork. If you think it's going to be a blow out and don't want to spend $6 to watch a blow out, then stay home. The games are not about me, you or any other fan. It's about the kids participating. I go to games to watch kids play the game they love and it doesn't bother me at all that by the third quarter of a blow out, one team may have sophomores and frosh out there participating. I get a ton of enjoyment watching those kids play too. While the KHSAA obviously wants lots of fans to attend the games, their mission is to increase participation in high school athletics because they believe that participation in athletics is good for kids. You'll find nothing in the KHSAA's mission statement about wanting every fan that attends every game to feel they got their money's worth to get into a game. It simply is not about you, me and the other fans; its about the kids.

 

I had a conversation just last night with another Highlands supporter. When I made a comment to him similar to the one in the prior paragraph, he said something to the effect of: the kids from Woodford couldn't have enjoyed participating in the game against Highlands. I differed strongly. As a player, even a player on a huge underdog team, I'd love the opportunity to see how I matched up with players on much better teams; I'd love the opportunity to show them I was also a very good player; I'd love the opportunity to pull off the upset that would never be forgotten at my school or in my hometown. I'd love the opportunity to play against a team like Highlands, Boyle, Beechwood, Bell, X, T, etc. And I'd love the opportunity to play just one more game of football in my high school career, regardless of the outcome. This isn't the NFL or even BCS conference college level. This is high school, where the objective of the competition is completely different. Personally, I think fans lose sight of that sometimes.

No offense taken. But part of the problem is you really don't get to see the offense the way you like. Once a team gets up by significant points they usually curtail the offensive plays. Another issue I have seen in our games is that the 2nd/3rd teams score a touchdown but it is called back by the phantom holding call. It stinks that those kids had one of their touchdowns taken off the board.

I am somwhere in the middle on this. I have always argued with people who said they need to go back to 2 seeds. However I am not a fan of teams automatically making the playoffs either. A team can not win a game and make the playoffs. For some teams who are just bad, they won't think about the playoff game as something they will remember forever. I think they should keep 4 seeds making it, but just make it 4 classes again instead of 6, or if anything 5 classes. Or if your going to keep 6 classes, then for 1 and 6A I think they should make it to where the top 2 seeds make it. Since there are only 4 teams per district. For me if a team earns a trip to the playoffs, then that is something they will remember forever, and not just getting handed it.
