I saw something things from CovCath yesterday that go far beyone the game on the field.

 

Spencer Hemmer's performance was inspiring. The young man experienced tragedy this week in the loss of his mom and came out and played superb. All I can say is wow. I am proud of Mr. Hemmer.

 

The look on Dan Gregory's face while he was standing on the sidelines, arm in an air cast, being led to the hospital was one of pure courage. It breaks my heart for his HS career to end this way, but he showed a strength that will pay off later in life I am sure.

 

Panda took a great picture of Mater's TD. The series before, Charlie dropped a ball. His teammates rallied around him and raised him above the dropped ball and the next series he goes 77 yds. A great lesson for Mr Mater and his teammates.

 

Coach Wirth should be proud. This is what the program is all about.

Very gracious comments. Best of luck to the Tomcats in all endeavors as well. The civility of BGP posters (for the most part) is what I like best of the site. Observations like those posted by Painter reflect very well on Ashland's program. :thumb:

I couldn't agree more. I got the chills at least twice that I can think of while watching him this week.

 

I don't know if anyone else saw, but there was an Ashland screen pass at the Cov Cath sideline that I could hardly believe Spence made the tackle on. He came flying out of nowhere to knock the receiver out of bounds.

I'm not from Ashland, but I'm pretty close to them and follow them. He's my take:

 

Ashland is pretty talented and has most of their team back this season, they were expected in the pre-season to be very strong. And should have been. The expectations were high, not only by the Ashland fans, but by most of the area. They started off strong: Beating a pretty good Greenup County team 44-28, beating Raceland (who had a three game winning streak versus Ashalnd a few years ago) 44-7, beating Belfry 36-22, and beating Russell 61-7. That was a very good start to the season and showed a lot of offensive fire power.

 

Then came the Ironton game, Ashland had beaten Ironton last season. Ashland had not beaten Ironton two years in a row since something like the 50's. Ashland was expected to beat an Ironton team that was thought to be a little down this year. Instead, they lost 43-6.

 

Since then, Ashland has beaten an average Waverly team, and a very down Woodford County. Losing to Johnson Central and to Montgomery County (who everyone expected them to beat) and now CovCath.

 

4-0 before Ironton. 3-4 after Ironton. 185 points before Ironton in 4 games. 160 points after Ironton in 7 games.

 

What caused this? I'm not sure, but it just seems like Ashland was a different team after the Ironton game. I don't know if it was just that big of a disappointment, or something else. But, that was a turning point in the season for Ashalnd.
