I believe that cost is already being paid by all of us who have health insurance. Hospitals budget for indigent care and they pass that cost along to us. If more dollars get paid in and indigent care cost goes down, then our cost should go down.

So do we take it that 60% are ok with health care reform? That sounds about right to me. I would guess more like 55-45 in favor of health care reform. If people believed health care reform is revenue neutral, it would be even higher in favor of reform. IMO many of those that are against it are against because of their perception of added cost. If you took a poll on whether health care reform was needed, it would be extremely high in favor of yes, reform was needed. That is why I think McConnell and Boehner are making a big mistake spending any of their perceived political capital on health care.

40% of those that voted against Democrats? About 21% of the total electorate, in other words. That would probably roughly correspond to the percentage of voters who wouldn't vote for the Democrat if Benedict Arnold were running on the Republican ticket. Now, we can't be sure that that's who said they were voting against HCR, but I can say that it's also the group more likely to say that HCR will kill Grandma.

Democrats should care more about turnout than why conservatives who would never vote for them voted against them.

 

In 2010, Obama beat McCain in the popular vote 52.9% to 45.7%. On Tuesday, McCain voters and Obama voters showed up at the polls at the same rate, 45%. There were a bunch of people that voted for Obama that stayed home on Tuesday.

30 million is about a 10% increase? I don't think 10% of a hospital's budget is currently for indigent care. Also, the cost of pre-existing conditions may dwarf that cost. I doubt it is a wash.

I'm not certain of their budget, because I'm still looking for that info, but at Univesity Hospital in Louisville 56% of the money spent was billed as “indigent care” which is equivalent to a burden of $6.8 million on the taxpayer.

It doesn't matter if jobs were created then. If they're savy and smart businessmen, they aren't going to go back to that level of taxation. If I own a business and my taxes are raised by say 5% for allowing the tax cuts to expire, I'm going to cut my expenses so that it doesn't impact my bottom line. The easiest way to do that for a company is to cut employees or find cheaper employees, i.e. overseas.

On the flip side, 7% of those that voted for McCain voted for Democrats. That's a 6% swap. Also, there was a big drop in attendance from those that voted for Obama in '08, and voters that sat '08 out broke for Republicans 3-2. None of this says mandate on HCR. It mostly says that a chunk of the base failed to show up, while the Republicans picked up some frustration votes.

I am so disgusted with McConnell and Boehner I can't see straight. Today's front page of the Enquirer contained this story - GOP Focus: Repeal of Health Bill. I could not find the article online to link it here. So I will tell you that the article is about how McConnell and Boehner will lead Republicans in trying to repeal health care reform. The article cites statistics that show the country is evenly divided on the health care reform bill. The article also cites poll results that show the voters last week overwhelming said the most important issues are reducing the deficit (38%) and spending to create jobs (37%). Only 18% of the voters thought health care is the most important issue.

 

THEY DON"T GET IT!!! We elect these guys and they don't listen. The only person who seems to understand this is Rand Paul. Who would have thought that the most reasonable minded person in Washington is going to be Rand Paul? He knows spending and the economy are the focus of the voters and are why he was elected. McConnell and Boehner are headed in the wrong direction before they even get started. Clueless. Just totally clueless.

You are 100% right on the economy. Now the health care reform issue reminds me of Roe vs. Wade. Initially the country is pretty well divided-so the politicans fight to get re-elected and so much money is poured into both sides to either keep the law or repeal it. I think this health care bill will have for decades the same acrimony as Roe vs. Wade still does.
