Biggest difference between the two that I can think of is that (and I'm paraphrasing someone here) when President Nixon gave a speech, the first thing you did was check your silverware drawer.

Ok. I guess I thought that you were denying that Republicans have been in full out stall mode against President Obama. Since you are not, I can pretty much agree with everything else that you said. However, it is nearly impossible to unite those that don't want to be united and that is what it has appeared to be to me since President Obama took office. Yet, phrases such as "I win" (Obama) and "You lie!" (Senator Joe Wilson) are indicative of such a stalemate.

"But I don't want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess. I don't mind cleaning up after them, but don't do a lot of talking."

or maybe when he said...

They can ride with us if they want, but they got to get in the back seat.

or possibly when he called them the enemy...

While the republicans have not been all that willing to help the President to say he has made a sincere effort is laughable. He as spent 2 years blaming Bush and the republicans every chance he's had. The country is no better now then we were when he took over. It's the Presidents job to unite and he has not come close to accomplishing that. Could the republicans be more cooperative, of course, but at the same time the President has to be the one to lead that process and President Obama just simply hasn't done that. IMO, it's mainly because to this point he hasn't had to. He can get most of what he wants to pass without their help while at the same time can have his talking point on the campaign trail that the rep don't want to meet in the middle.

When one of these characters win an election. There thought process is not what can I do to make this country better. It immediately begins with how much money can I raise and what will I have to do to win the next election. If there was some way we the people could get term limits on theses folks maybe...just maybe something might get accomplished.

Two of them I believe were made this year but one was made last year. What does that matter?

I go back to a thread I posted on here awhile back that I think the President and VP should be not allowed to campaign for any candidate/party besides their own election.

 

They are the President of the United States and to see them out campaigning for Senators/Governors/Representatives does nothing but drive this country further apart.

Exactly! He's been much more divisive than Bush or Clinton ever were.

In July of 2009 he said of Sharon Angle: "She favors an approach that's even more extreme than the Republicans we got in Washington... "That's saying something."

 

As far back as June of 2008 he said "they" - the Republicans - will play the race card.

 

He's blamed Bush and the Republicans for pretty much everything from the get go and still continues to do so.

 

In April, the Democratic National Committee released a video in which the president directly addressed his divide-and-conquer campaign strategy, with an appeal to: "young people, African-Americans, Latinos, and women who powered our victory in 2008 to stand together once again." - This hardly sounds like a guy reaching out to the other side to me.

 

His very early on comment of "I won" that TB&G alluded earlier is yet another example.

 

These are just quick, off the cuff examples. I'm sure there are many more.

 

 

I'm just not seeing a president that's doing any real reaching out here. All I'm seeing is more of the same old garbage we've seen for too long.
