Should Boone Lose Their Ryle Game Intentionally?

Featured Replies

Boone plays Ryle this week in their last 6A district game. They come in at 1-3.

Ryle cannot lose the #1 spot regardless of what happens in this game.

If Boone would beat Ryle the only way Boone would then make the playoffs is if Cooper should upend Conner.

However, if Boone would lose this game AND Cooper beats Conner they would end up in a 3-way tie and win the 4th spot via the tiebreaker.

So what's in it for Boone to win this game?

Pride?

Sure but that pride they gain will have them on the sidelines should they beat Ryle and Conner beats Cooper.

Pride or playoffs?

There is no incentive for Boone to lose. The Conner Cooper game decides if Boone gets in the playoffs, regardless of whether Boone wins or loses. So Boone may as well go ahead and try to win. If Boone gained an advantage by losing, there would be an argument that Boone should lose but that is not the case.

I don't think they'll have to fret over the decision.

Incorrect, my friend.

If Boone wins AND Conner wins they end up tied for the 4th spot. Conner wins the tie-breaker.

If all 3 end up at 1-4 Boone wins the tie-breaker.

Possibly. However, Ryle has no incentive to win so they may choose to go conservative and/or sub in more players than in a game that meant something. Do we have to pull up the Ryle/Cooper score to remind us that Ryle can play down to their competition?

Incorrect, my friend.

But if Boone wins and Cooper wins, Boone is in, right?

But if Boone wins and Cooper wins, Boone goes in with a 2-3 record. Boone cannot go unless Cooper wins. Period. So, there would be no advantage to Boone playing to lose.

How can there not be an advantage for Boone to lose when the "Boone wins - Conner wins" scenario knocks them out of the 4th spot?

Boone Wins/Conner Wins:

1. Ryle

2. SK/CC

3. SK/CC

4. Conner

4. Boone

5. Cooper

Conner makes the playoffs .

Boone loses/Cooper wins:

1. Ryle

2. SK/CC

3. SK/CC

4.Conner

4.Boone

4. Cooper

Boone makes the playoffs due to winning the 3-way tiebreaker.

THAT's why there is no incentive for Boone to win. It could keep them out.

Because if Conner wins, Boone is out no matter what they do. If Cooper wins, Boone is in no matter what they do. What Boone does has no bearing at all on whether they get in. So you are right in the sense there is no playoff incentive to win, but there is also no playoff incentive for them to lose. So the Ryle game is just like a non district game in that sense.

Am I speaking Chinese here? Your first sentence is incorrect.
