What is the #1 thing the Reds should not do?

They should not trade for "hopefuls". Any player they bring in by trade should be a proven high level player at his position. Otherwise, roll with the young talent and stick to the plan. It is finally paying off.

I'll go with Voice of Reason on this one.

Keep Harang.

I think you're right. The biggest mistake the Reds could do is keep Harang; however, I think it's obvious that he's a goner.

So, my #1 thing that they should NOT do is overestimate their pitching. There is a lot of young talent in the organization, but you can NEVER have too much. If we make package a few pitchers for a good OF or SS, then we may spread ourselves too thin with our pitching. It's a long season, and injuries happen. This season we were fortunate to have enough pitching depth to overcome some injuries. If you have 7-8 capable starters, it's a lot easier to make the postseason.

The 2nd worst thing the Reds could do is remain complacent with their lineup. Gomes had a career year. Rolen wore down at the end of the season. Votto had an MVP / career year. Same with Stubbs & Bruce. As much as I hate to say it, I don't think you can expect ANY of them to match their numbers from this year. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

But how do you keep them all happy? You'll have to send 1 or 2 down or into the bullpen and quite frankly, none of them deserve that.

He already said he doesn't want to sign a long term deal.

Then he's a dipstick.

Sorry, didn't see the not.

Then, heck that's easy. Bring that horse's rearend Paul Keels back to announce games.

1. Volquez

2. Arroyo

3. Cueto

4. Leake

5. Wood

6. Chapman

7. Bailey

8. Maloney

9. Lecure

Am I missing anyone?

I think Maloney & Chapman start in AAA. That leaves 6 pitchers, meaning that either Leake or Wood are likely the odd man out.

In reality, Johnny Cueto and/or Homer Bailey are the most likely pitchers to be traded. Maloney could be gone, but his value is a notch below Cueto and Bailey.

Forgot Lecure - thanks Crash.

Not really. Votto is going to get $7-$8 million in arbitration this offseason. As of now, he'd probably only get $10-$12 million for the next few seasons from a long-term deal. If he has another great year next season, then his overall body of work looks much, much more impressive. If he hits .320 with 35+ HR next year, he'd likely get something closer to $15 million in a long-term deal. Plus, who knows what this lineup will look like in 2 years without Rolen (and maybe Phillips.)

And if he gets dinged next year? I think that's a bit risky. Perhaps he's right. If not, he may cost himself millions.

Why Cueto?

I would say Maloney is about two notches below Cueto and one below Bailey ... unproven lefty finesse guys don't always fetch a great deal on the market.

Man, that looks awesome. If one of those guys steps up and is THE ace, next year will be fun. Don't really care who it is as long as it's not Bronson. Nothing against him that just means they haven't progressed like we hoped.

Moving Chapman back to a starter?

Wood can not be the odd man out. I'd take him over Homer right now. Leake may need a year in AAA so he doesn't overdo it.

The interesting thing about Wood ... counting the postseason and his minor league time, he threw 206 innings this season, more than most organizations like to go with a 23-year-old prospect. His pitch counts with the Reds were fine, although he may have been a little worn down in September.

Regardless, I think Votto will make plenty of money. The potential for a big day is much greater than the potential of an injury or a slump that may cost him. Just my opinion.
