Last time Holmes wasn't preseason #1 was in either 05 or 06 when Covcath was relevant in the 9th region title talks.

 

Cov. Cath. played in the Regional Championship game in 07 (Beat Holmes in the District Championship, lost to Holmes @ Holmes in overtime in the Regional Championship game) and also played in the Regional Championship game in 08.

I believe the question was when was the last time Holmes wasn't preseason #1. Pretty sure Holmes was preseason #1 in 07, despite the fact that Jefferson was sidelined with a broken leg. If I'm wrong, my apologies in advance.

 

As far as the 07 season goes, that region championship game was the first game of the year that Holmes had all of their players healthy. (Jefferson, Rice, Hill, Henderson, Nelson)

 

If my memory serves me correctly, they lost to Covcath by just 4 with their jv team plus Hill and Henderson. (?)

 

Jefferson was hurt until February. Rice, Henderson, and a few others were suspended mid season for an incident. And I believe Holmes was without a player or two in the district championship as well.

 

Who knows what would've happened in those other games, but I like Holmes' chances in those other two losses if they have Hill, Rice, Jefferson, and Henderson all 4 on the court at the same time like they did in the region championship.

I have personally coach watched these boys and coached many of these boys over the years. They have some great athletes, time will tell how the do this year. I just think they have a lot to prove. They lost the core of their team the last 4 years and I believe we are kidding ourselves if you think they will not have a down year after loosing so much talent.

 

Define down? I agree they have a lot to prove, which is why I have my doubts, but this team is definetly capable of making it to the region championship this year. Will it happen? Who knows?

 

But I'd let this group create their own identity before declaring they will have a down year. From what I've heard, there are a lot of new faces out this year that didn't try out in recent years for whatever reasons.

I believe the Holmes group will be just fine. Maybe not the same as they have been in the past, but they will establish their own identity and be successful, because these are boys that enjoy playing basketball and will work hard regardless of who's there.

I'm not disputing the preseason accolades for the Bulldogs in 07 and 08. However, Cov. Cath. was also relevant to preseason (season) & (tournament) 9th region title talks in 07 and 08. The Colonels ended up playing in the Regional Championship game both years.

Rankings don't really matter to me, except it looks like there will be a bunch of good basketball in Northern Kentucky.

Coach Henley and the past 3 seniors classes laid a great foundation for the future players. Winning has become expected down there in Covington, which has led to the kids working harder both on and off the court.

I agree. Holmes in basketball is like Highlands in football. They are always good. Frequently great, but always good.

I just heard that Keavon Rice was kicked off of Holmes team and trying to enroll into Holy Cross.

From what I had heard during the summer, Kevon and Booher were not exactly on the same page. Not a big shocker here.

I think it makes Holmes a better team without Keavon Rice because of the drama he brings to the team.

I have seen crazier things happen but I cant imagine he just steps into an Indian uniform. No matter how you want to deny it, Holmes could have used his athleticism and rebounding.

Holmes is going to lack size and depth in the front court this coming season as it is. Losing Kevon is a huge loss to the team. I'd be surprised if he was able to enroll at HC and become eligible. I also don't see him doing this for the simple fact that Dontel (younger brother) is still on the team as of today's practice. I don't see Mike Rice sending his boys to two different schools.

 

Hopefully things will work out for Kevon and he will be able to re-join the team later in the season after EARNING his spot back.

 

What is going on down there in Covington? Since last year, they have lost Christian McClendon and Jaylen Avery to Holy Cross, 6'8 David Stephens to Simon Kenton, JaKeith Pitts to Boone Co, and now Kevon Rice due to being kicked off the team. All 5 were key members to the success of Holmes this year and in the future.

 

Don't be surprised if you see a lot of younger guys for Holmes this year. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Palmer, Englemon, or Coston start for the Dogs this year.
