As soon as you show someone a Fairview schedule in Westwood they skim their finger straight down and circle Raceland. If you think anything other than that you are crazy! This rivalry has been a little more dormant the past couple years. But I can tell you one thing it was nasty back in the early 2000's. This game is like the Alabama/Auburn, Michigan/Ohio State, Texas/Oklahoma games of the college world. Anyone who has been a part of Raceland football the past 10 years or so knows that. Try to downplay it all you want. But we know better. And this rivalry will only get more bitter now with the new alignment.

Wow...you miss a thread for a day around here and you miss a lot! Thanks for all the kind words. I've enjoyed posting here for the past few years and I've always enjoyed reading the Raceland posts as well.

 

As for the game, I don't know where to begin in making a prediction. There are so many unknowns. Fairview is undefeated, but 5 of those 6 wins have come against bad teams. West Carter isn't good, but they're at least respectable...so I would consider that a quality win. Raceland has 5 lopsided wins against bad teams, too, coupled with 2 bad losses against good teams. Combine that with the fact Fairview does supposedly have quite a few newcomers to their team and I just don't see how anyone could tell what's going to happen in this week's game. With it being so late in the season, I doubt that there is another matchup in the state with so many unanswered questions. It should be a fun game to watch, coach, and play in, though, with so much pride, a possible district championship, and home field advantage in the playoffs on the line.

 

Having to add something else Russell-related to the thread, though, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that both teams are coached by 2 of the best linemen that have ever played at Russell.

 

West is very respectable considering they are home grown team. Was more impressed with Fairveiw than Russell in the 2 losses that West has. But also was impressed with Raceland in the Grid. With all things considered I'll go with Raceland in this battle, it'll mean me more to the kids at Raceland.

Homegrown. I love that term. So what in Olive Hill would attract kids from somewhere like Huntington, for instance?

Demographically speaking nothing. Poor economy, destroyed by floods. Not sure what your point is? But it is nice competeing with kids that are from families that are from a small town.

Didnt mean for the comment to come off as harsh. I sure didn't mean it that way. I think that the influx of kids in other areas in our region will always produce non-homegrown talent in individual schools. Olive Hill is an exception. However, I'm sure that in the event a stud moved into the West Carter school system, you'd freely drop the homegrown stance, correct?:thumb:

I have no idea what Fairview brings to the table, I know they brought a good team to Raceland last year in what was a very good game. I know Raceland has surprised me this year, both good and bad. Raceland has played a couple of good teams where as Fairview has played their typical schedule, so be it. The thing that scares me about Fairview is their running game, Raceland's defense against the run this year has been spotty at best. I think this is Fairview's first true test this year, I think if Raceland holds Fairview's rushing game in check and leaves no scoring opportunities on the field, they will win a tight one. Just my two cents.

If that ever happens it'll be by chance or luck. In which time I would that we would be a much better team cause of a kid that moved in. My point was that some teams seem to have luck every year or so with random kids coming into their programs, and some teams are ever so lucky to have 2,3,4,5 as many as 6 maybe even more just randomly come to there programs. Oh yes in addition! Huntington is about 50min away from Olive Hill. Sure would be awful hard to make it to class on time.

A pretty good run down of the two teams. It may be a cliché, but it will come down to defense, who's defense plays better. I think both teams will put points on the board, but one defense is going to have to rise up and stop the other offense.

Fairveiw has a very aggressive defense that is physical and likes to blitz. Raceland offense loves to use the screen and short passing "the system" type football. That'll style of offense can be big trouble for aggressive defenses. I think the major factor in the game is will Fairveiws talented and physical DL be able to create pressue to disrupt Racelands passing game.

One of my biggest concerns coming into this year was Raceland's youth at the offensive and defensive line positions, I have been surprised, for the most part both sides have been very solid this year. Like I said before, Raceland's tackling scares me the most, there is way too much arm tackling at times.
