Unsweetened in a landslide. I love plain old cornbread. I could eat it about every day, although I must say I couldn't ever treat it like cerel.

I haven't had homemade corn bread since my grandmother passed several years ago, anyone willing to post a good recipe?

Unsweetened is a must... Mom has a cast iron baking tray that has little ears of corn as the impressions. They make the crust nice and crispy on the bottom. Just add enough butter so that it is dripping off of your elbow before you finish your last piece!

This just reminded me...years ago I was out to dinner with my old girlfriend's family for her birthday. Her grandparents were up in town from North Carolina, which meant her grandmother (an extraordinarily "southern" woman) was with us. Her grandmother was, to put it simply, not a big fan of me. She very displeased with the fact that her one and only grandchild was dating a Catholic boy, and as such she never would address me personally, and when she did speak about me, she opted to use the term "the heathen" in place of my name. :lol:

 

Anyway, we were at Walt's Hitching Post in Covington for dinner, and the waiter asked me if I wanted rye bread or corn bread with my ribs. I went with corn bread, at which point, good old grandma looked over at me, and mustering her most disdainful, Foghorn Leghorn-esque voice, she said, "Cornbread? I'll bet your momma cain't make cornbread."

 

I responded saying, kindly, that, "Yes, my mother does make cornbread. It's very good, in fact."

 

Then grandma turned her head away from me, took a sip of her hot tea, and said, "...bet it comes out of a box." :lol: :lol:

Always make extra, because my husband loves to eat cornbread and milk. He takes the cronbread, crumbles it up in a glass and pours milk over it. Eats it with a spoon.

 

My Granny used to make me this when I was little, and she still eats it like that. It's surprisingly pretty good. Personally, I'll take cornbread anyway I can get it. I like both sweet and unsweet.

My mom, dad and all my grandparents always ate it with buttermilk. My grandmother would always make a new skillit of cornbread fro lunch. Every night for dinner, withouth fail, my grandfather ate cornbread and buttermilk for his meal...nothing else but dessert afterwards.

My favorite way to eat it!! If you haven't tried it, Mexican cornbread is delicious also..

I voted "doesn't matter" just bc I love cornbread, any and all types of cornbread. Should I ever have to decide on just one type for life it would be the regular not sweet/traditional style cornbread.

I've had this debate with my fiancé and her family very recently. I'm guessing sweet cornbread is a northern thing, cause her mom who's from Michigan loves sweet, her dad being from KY likes unsweetened, and she who's always lived in KY said "it's alright, but I'd rather have regular." I'm from Mississippi and I could eat an entire skillet of sweet cornbread!

I always thought the same, but I know a family from Tennessee that prefers sweet. Mrs. S is from Elmira, New York and when she made her cornbread for me for the first time, when we were dating, she made it sweet.

Mom used to crumble it up in a glass of milk and add sugar for desert.

My grandpa always talked about his mom making peadlum and about how much he liked it. It always sounded great, but I've never had it. I'll gladly accept recipes, though. :thumb:

My grandmother used to make it now and again when I was a kid. Dad lived off of it when he was growing up. I'll have to get the recipe from him, but she used to make it 2 ways.

Well since I've cut bread out of my diet, I have yet to eat any cornbread this year. If I was.........just regular fried cornbread would be my choice.
