To each their own. Rankings are discussion anyway, but I don't believe in throwing a bone to someone with a paper tiger 5-0 record if I don't believe they'd be capable of living up to that with a different schedule. That's something I believe BGP agrees with, which is why you don't see either of those teams in the top 10, nor the likes of Perry County Central.

 

I'm somewhere in the middle. I agree with what both gchs_uk19 and Dragonfire are saying to a degree...but not entirely. I believe you have to pay some attention to any undefeated team halfway through the season. But that's doesn't mean I'm going to put them in the top 10. Likewise, I don't believe in giving a one-win team a vote just because they have the toughest schedule. At some point in time, you have to win games.

 

i.e., not every SEC football team deserves recognition because they have to play a tough SEC schedule. Big deal.

 

After the regular season is over... Keep in mind that the only thing a winless team has proven that has played a really tough schedule is that they could be the 11th-best team in the state...and the only thing an undefeated team has ever truly proven is that they are no worse than 11th-worst... The truth, of course, is often somewhere in the middle.

If you look at the 5A AP Poll this week, you'll see that our mysterious "Bowling Green is #1" voter has struck again after hiding in the bushes for a couple of weeks. Would the secret voter please raise their hand?

 

Something zanier occurred in the 6A AP Poll where the 18 voters collaborated to allow powerful Central Hardin (4-0) to come out of left field and enter the Top 10 at position #9. So far this season, 6A Central Hardin has defeated 4A Logan County (1-4) 31-14, 3A Spencer County (0-5) 38-12, 3A Elizabethtown (0-4) 28-26, and 5A Ohio County 37-21. :eek:

 

This is beginning to serve as a weekly supplement to my comic strip reading. :lol:

 

I've never understood why anyone looks at the AP poll as a source of information in the first place. Probably the most useless piece of information you'll find in any paper the day the paper publishes it. A reporter/editor has no more training in football knowledge than in landing the space shuttle.

 

The only credence I'd ever give the AP, is because reporters/editors are suppossed to be unbiased. Alas, as proven again this week, that's not the case.

I don't believe that playing a tough schedule is the only thing that matters either. It depends on how they played in those games as well. Losing 49-7 to every team, no matter how good, doesn't mean as much. But if you're losing like 21-14 every time out, playing teams like Ballard, Ryle, etc., that means more to me than watching a good team beat an awful team by 40.

If it helps...to those that matter most in all this (the teams themselves), I believe the rankings -- be they AP, LitRatings, or even BGP (which I think are probably the most legitimate since they're done by humans and are based on things like wins PLUS strength of schedule) -- don't matter one hill of beans.

 

First, with the system set up as it is in Kentucky, rankings (and overall season record for that matter) mean nothing toward your playoff position. All that matters is your record IN-DISTRICT.

 

Where these rankings CAN have an effect is in giving teams that are ranked highly a bloated sense of how good they are before the DISTRICT games that really matter are played.

 

There's only two sets of rankings I ever look at as a coach (and it's not til well after the season is over). 1) Where were we predicted in pre-season polls and 2) did we finish higher or lower than that.
