If you look at the 5A AP Poll this week, you'll see that our mysterious "Bowling Green is #1" voter has struck again after hiding in the bushes for a couple of weeks. Would the secret voter please raise their hand?

 

Something zanier occurred in the 6A AP Poll where the 18 voters collaborated to allow powerful Central Hardin (4-0) to come out of left field and enter the Top 10 at position #9. So far this season, 6A Central Hardin has defeated 4A Logan County (1-4) 31-14, 3A Spencer County (0-5) 38-12, 3A Elizabethtown (0-4) 28-26, and 5A Ohio County 37-21. :eek:

What even made this more interesting is that Central Hardin ranked 30th out of 36 teams in 6A by the Lit. Ratings which were also released today. :lol:

^ Maybe that AP voter thinks the eastern side of 5A (including Highlands) is overrated.

Would love to know who he/she voted at #2 and #3... Bowling Green is a defensible choice for number one, although it's obvious that the vast majority of folks believe Highlands is king until de-throned. But after BG, who else is a plausible choice to be ranked above the Birds??????

Nothing surprises me in the AP world. At least there aren't any votes for schools that don't have teams; which has happened in the not-too-distant past.

Sad, but that does seem to weigh heavily in the minds of at least some of the voters.

I don't really have a problem with throwing an undefeated team like Central Hardin or Grayson County a bone after four or five games, but only put them in the #10 spot. Just because they are undefeated probably doesn't mean you need them in the #2 slot!

You don't? I do. Who you play matters. You give me the ability to make the schedules, I'll give you a 5-0 team at this point at a whole bunch of schools in this state.

I really don't. With six classes there aren't any more than 35 teams eligible to be ranked. Good guess is that 5 of those teams are guarantees to be ranked every year. 10 of those teams are terrible and will never be ranked. That leaves 20 teams in the middle that are often hard to distinguish between. I'm not sure what the best way to rank them would be, but I might throw a 10th place vote to a Grayson County team that is 5-0. Maybe that's not perfect, but I didn't say I was putting them first. And if they aren't ranking quality then it will reveal itself sooner than later - if they do turn out to be quality, then I was on the bandwagon before anyone else!

To each their own. Rankings are discussion anyway, but I don't believe in throwing a bone to someone with a paper tiger 5-0 record if I don't believe they'd be capable of living up to that with a different schedule. That's something I believe BGP agrees with, which is why you don't see either of those teams in the top 10, nor the likes of Perry County Central.
