Trinity is obviously a first-rate football program, and yet I don't know much about the program's history. Could some of the BGP Trinity "historians" post some information about the program's history? Perhaps information about how long they've played football, their different head coaches, most memorable games the team has played in, and best players and squads.

I'll start off.

Trinity was founded in 1953 and had its first graduating class in 1957. It has been at the same location in St. Matthews since its inception.

From 1955 (first varsity season) through 1963, the Coach was Charles "Jeep" Quire.

Paulie Miller was the Coach in 1964 and Pail Gering in 1965.

Jim Kennedy coached from 1966 through 1972 and brought T's first state cahmpionship in 1968.

Dave Moore (recently deceased) coached from 1973 through 1977 and won 3 state championships.

Dennis Lampley coached from 78-79.

Roger Gruneisen coached from 1980 though '84 and won State in '83.

Dennis Lampley (current AD) again coached from '85 through '94 and won State four times.

Chuck Servino caoched from '95 through '98 and was state runner-up in '97.

Kevin Wright coached in 1999.

Bob Beatty has coached from 2000 through the present and has won the State 7 times. His record is now 129-21

Since 1973, the overall record is 423-79.

It's like torture for me to type, so I'll add more as the mood strikes.

Memorable is easy. Trinity vs Male 2002 championship. Brohm and Bush. Maybe the finest highschool game ever.

Curious, what Trinity team had the most players go on to play D1? I recall the 84 team had Andy Murray, Carwell Gardner, Donnie Gardner and Mike Pfeiffer who all went on to play D1. Not sure if any others like Jason Larch or Scott Gregory walked on D1 schools or not. Were there any other Rock teams with more D1 talent than that group?

They also own the state's longest win streak at 50 games, correct?

Great recap - from HC perspective. GReat to see the influence and growth.

 

What many on here will not realize is that during those long and early years -- T "got kicked around " pretty good. Would not go so far as to say 'doormats' - but we were not anyone to be reckoned with -IMO. T faced the great Male and Manual programs of the 60's, the end of the Flaget dynasty, Wilbur Hackett, all the great Male atheletes, Dicky Lyons and others at X and on and on and on.

I am pretty sure none of them got up on game day and said; "oh no --we got Trinity tonight."

 

It has been a long hard process. Alot of people poured alot into helping it get to where it is today. It is very rewarding to see the product today.

It what way (if any) is the Trinity clientele different from the St. X clientele?

 

Also, did Flaget closing down have a positive impact on Trinity's football program (perhaps Trinity getting student-athetes who would have gone to Flaget had it not closed)?

From the 1968 state championship team, Tom Rittle and Alan Hennessey both went to Georgia Tech (recruited by Jerry Glanville) and I believe that Dennis Scully, a junior on that team, also went to Ga. Tech. Also, and I'm quite hazy about this, Steve Sutton from that team went to Brown or Dartmouth and maybe another player went to Annapolis. Mark Sheehan maybe went to EKU or WKU----again very hazy on these. Would appreciate clarification.

Ga. Tech seemed to have a pipeline because a few years later Bob Bruenderman went there and maybe Steve Raible went there, too.

BTW (and off topic) I was surprised to learn that Cincy St. X is a Jesuit school. With the name "Xavier" I always thought they were with the Xavierian Brothers like their Louisville counterpart. For all you Catholics out there, shouldn't the school be named after St. Ignatius Loyola?

There is a St. Ignatius in Cleveland and they are a national football power.

 

Both St. X in Cincinnati and Xavier University in Cincinnati are both Jesuit institutions.......
