According to the story, Highlands, CovCath, Holmes and Cooper will be in a 4A district. What's to keep the KHSAA from adding Harrison County and/or Pendleton County to this district?

 

I think they will. It will be very hard to prove a geographic hardship in that instance.

Would you rather Highlands be in a 4A district with only Holmes, CovCath and Cooper, or with Holmes, CovCath, Cooper, Harrison County and Pendleton County?

I realize that your question was towards HHS fans but if you would allow me, I will say that I would welcome the two additional teams to the district.

 

As it stands now, you don't even have to win one game to move on, and I for one think that is a joke that the KHSAA can't allow to happen any longer. I want those District games to mean something other than whether you travel or play a home game in the playoffs.

 

Games that mean something will draw more fans, make the players/coaches work harder and bring some excitement back to some of the district games that has been lacking for a while now!

Love the 4A thing.

I can see the plus side to having two additional teams in the district, especially since Highlands has evidently had some issues filling out its schedule (and thus having to play Ryle twice in back-to-back years). However, and I mean no offense to either Pendleton County or Harrison County, but these two games won't likely be good tests for Highlands in preparation for the playoffs, will they? Would it be better to have the additional flexibility of being able to schedule two more non-district games, even though it's been at least somewhat challenging to fill out 10 games the last two years?

While I have to agree with you on it not being a good test for HHS or for that matter CovCath, both teams have to understand that whats best for HHS and CovCath, isn't always whats best for some of the other schools in the district or the KHSAA.

As difficult as it has been for Mueller to fill a complete schedule, I'd say he would welcome the additional district teams.

Those teams include Boyle, Johnson Central, LexCath, Cooper and Harrison County wanting to move from 4A to 5A.

Pretty funny Johnson Central petitions to move down to 4A and now they are going to petition to move up to 5A.

Geographic concerns = Fort Thomas is a tough hill to climb.

 

This is the true reason for geographical requests. All of the opponents for Boyle will be less than an hour. All of the opponents for Lex. Cath. will be less than 1 and a 1/2 away. Considering they went to Lone Oak last year I really don't think they are concerned about 1.5 hour bus ride every other year.

Perhaps. I haven't really looked at what their potential district would look like in 4A vs what it would look like in 5A and considered the travel differences/savings if a move up was granted. I also haven't considered the effect it would have on the 4A teams they would leave behind or the 5A district they would join. From what I understand, the KHSAA wouldn't be real supportive of a request, even if a school was geographically isolated, if it caused some other 4A team to be moved into the left behind district and experience its own travel problems as a result or if the move up would cause some 5A team to get bumped to another district and experience its own travel problems. There are a lot of things to be carefully considered.

 

I wonder IF the wrong message could be sent by a coach/school to his players and program supporters by making a move up request without a very, very strong geographical isolation argument to support it; particularly if the result (but not necessarily the motivation) of a move up was to avoid a powerhouse program. What do others think?

Here's a question: since when does Boyle County try to dodge an opponent? If I recall correctly, the Rebels did just fine when they were moved into the same class as Highlands, winning three straight Class AAA titles and going 2-2 against the 'Birds (actually, 3-1 if you count the forfeited game as a HHS loss).

 

Are we for sure that Boyle County's request is due to something other than geography?

This is the problem with this whole discussion, if an exception is made for one, then it must be made for others. Once again-the more classes you have provides greater opportunity to try to maneuver. The travel stuff is bunk, as many, many teams travel, and it would be every other year.

With 6 classes and the new alignment there are plenty of State Titles to go around....unless you happen to play in 6A or 4A!
