The Yanks will sign him and make him happy. I don't what that figure is, but they will pay it.

I could make the argument both ways...I don't feel teams owe it coaches (Bowden and Paterno) or players that are declining. We've watched it hurt the Reds and if we don't want to use that example we can look at the Celtics. They held on and showed loyalty to the big 3 (the real big 3) and it hurt them, Bias aside, and it "could" hurt the Yanks. However, in this case, I would resign him. He has a special quality that we don't see very often, if ever, and can still play. I don't know what the magic number, but 3-4 years and they could see him start to hurt their cause. Tough call.

SS are weak overall and even though Jeter is getting older he is still not bad. But I would not give him 20+ million which is what he is going to get.

Putting "percentages" aside, Jeter has played in 138 games (#1 at SS), had 584 at bats (#1 at SS) and scored 96 runs (#1 SS) with 152 hits (#3 SS). He's in the top 10 OBP and #12 SLG and #13 AVG, #12 OPS.

 

He's still a much better than average short stop, and he's a positive influence on the team.

Business decisions for the Yankees are a vastly different thing than business decisions for the rest of the league, certainly the Reds. Your question was if "we were the Yanks" - ie. looking at this deal through the eyes of the Yankees' business decision makers - would we resign him? If I had their amount of cash bankrolling my decisions, then yes, I'd resign. If this is a business deicision for just about any other team, certainly the Reds, I do not resign him.

I think that what you're talking about is the reality of sports, and I think it's the ugliest part. The Yankees have the means to go above what the "Smart" choice would be and do what is right by Jeter and many of the Yankees fans. Maybe it's not the way it's done in the business world, but it's the way the fans would do it. It's the way many of us hope our teams would do.

 

Sometimes things are bigger than a few wins or money. Jeter has made hundreds of millions for the Yankees, why not reward him when you can? Would you really want to see him get to 3,000 hits in a Rangers jersey? Has he not done enough for them to look past his declining game, especially when it's not really hurting the team?

Let me make this clear, I hate the Yankees. Hate them.

 

Okay, with that said, if they let Jeter walk it would be one of the biggest travesties in sports. Jeter is the Yankees, and symbolizes everything about the Yankees.
