Your question was if "we were the Yanks" - ie. looking at this deal through the eyes of the Yankees' business decision makers - would we resign him? If I had their amount of cash bankrolling my decisions, then yes, I'd resign. If this is a business deicision for just about any other team, certainly the Reds, I do not resign him. I fully agree that the Yanks are a different animal when it comes to being able to blow money on bad decisions. The Yanks are still trying to win the toughest division in baseball and the Rays aren't getting any worse. They still have to look at decisions that will get them to the playoffs. Add in that George is no longer making decisions and it could get interesting.

Add in that George is no longer making decisions and it could get interesting. I don't know that I would say having Jeter back as your starting SS "hurts" your chances to make the playoffs. The question is whether it's smart to pay him that sum of money (it's not, but the Yankees have the luxury of defining "smart" business decisions differently that the rest of the world) and whether you could spend that money a bit more wisely (you probably could). I still don't think Jeter is going to hurt the Yankees anywhere close to the degree that Larkin did as he ended his career with the Reds.

I just think he's done more for them than any player in the last 30 years. He brought them back to a championship level. I do think the Yankees owe it to him. You could pay the guy 18 million and he would easily pay for himself.

Most teams have to do the professional thing, but the Yankees can do the "right" thing and be loyal to one of the best players in team history. It's not like he provides nothing.

How can you say he's not going to hurt the Yanks? His fielding is subpar. His offense is declining. OPS+ is a measure of slugging/OBP factoring in the ballparks. 100 is dead average. He's 91 ie below average. First ballot HOF and great leader. I think the Yanks would prefer to not have to sign him for a lot but they're probably stuck.

September 13, 201016 yr I'd be okay either way. I do not believe the Yankees owe him anything. He performed well and was compensated for his services. Now, if the Yanks have a young SS prospect, I'd think it would be worth a few mil to sign Jeter and have him groom the kid. We all saw how much Edmonds helped Bruce in the short period of time that they've been together. Of course, Jeter may not agree with that. I'm sure he thinks he can still play at a high level. I love Jeter but it's a business. Furthermore, it's the Yankees and if he can't help you win he must go. If he lays an egg in the playoffs and contiues his struggles it will be an easy decision. Regardless of what has happened in the past he'll be a "BUM" to Yankee fans.
