Can Highlands match what Beechwood did in the 90's?

Featured Replies

The Birds have 3 peated as State Champs and are most likely considered the favorite to win 5A once again. Can they continue to win championships over the next few years with the talent they have in place?

If you would have asked me 2 yrs ago if there was a year where the Birds might fall off on talent a little I would have likely said this season. However, many of this year's Sr's have really stepped up and picked up where last year's squad left off. Abner, Huddleston, Hollingsworth, Seidl, Sullivan, etc. They are very strong this season and I dont see them getting any worse over the next few years. The Junior class is loaded with talent like Towles, Sheehan, Bruns bros., Quillen, True, Dressman to name a few. Throw in this year's JV team with loaded sophomores from last year's Frosh Championship team as well. They have taken care of business in their first two games whipping Ryle's JV and Conner this morning.

The Freshman team this year might be the best since Austin Collinsworth's year at that level. They are absolutely huge on the line and have some studs in the backfield in Hayes, Wrobleski and Harris.

I honestly think they have the ability to win 3 more in a row. Not trying to put any pressure on any of them and I know they have to take care of business one game at a time this season but the talent level seems to be there for a dynasty to form.

Hard to say. Beechwood in the 1990s holds the record for most consecutive wins by a NKY team with 38... Highlands is currently sitting at 31 straight wins. In order for HHS to tie BW's record, they will have to run the table in the regular season and go 10-0. It's never easy going through a regular season undefeated and the 'Birds have to travel to Ryle in October. Hopefully Highlands will take the season one game at a time; if they do, who knows what they can accomplish.

Beyond this season, it's really hard to say how the 'Birds will fare in winning titles. It seems they will be moving to 4A, and this will probably be a harder class to win than 5A has been for HHS.

Agree with you JB that 4A state wide is a more competitive class than 5A, with the likes of Boyle and Bell County. As for running the table this year, Dale will not allow them to look past any opponent which makes their chances of breaking BW's NKY win streak a good possibility.

As for Gryche11's comment on the future prospects of HHS, the underclassman, including the current 9th grade class (and the 8th grade class for that matter) have a tremendous upside. For that reason, the sky's the limit in Ft. Thomas.

I think the move to 4A will most definitely create more of a challenge for the future Birds.

How does everyone think the Birds would match up this year against Boyle Co and their stud Div 1 LB? That used to be a great rivalry and I am sure it will resurface.

I'm sure Boyle is good, but probably not nearly as good as Ryle. I think the Birds would do to them what they do to other good teams they face....JUST WIN BABY!:D

When it's all said and done, Highlands will be nearing Trinity's state record of consecutive wins, and Beechwood's will simply be an image in the rearview mirror.

Depending on what Dale has scheduled for next year, I could really see them going undefeated the next two seasons. One game at a time though.

Is it wrong of a Boyle County fan to interject that the records they are chasing are: Trinity's consecutive games (50) and BOYLE'S Record of 5 Straight State Titles. Beechwood had a great run as well but Boyle is the current mark for consecutive titles. :D

I think right now Highlands can threaten both btw.

Beechwood won 38 straight

Breathitt and Danville 42

Boyle 47

Those are the next marks on the hit parade for the Birds. :thumb:

Highlands can pass Breathitt and Danville this season with a perfect 15-0 mark. That would put them at 43 straight wins.

They would then need just 4 wins to start next season to tie Boyle, and 6 straight to tie Trinity. I think both are very attainable considering the talent the Birds have on next year's team.

Boyle holds the record with 5 consecutive state rings. I think they hold another record of 6 straight state championship appearances, correct me if i'm wrong. I, for one, would look forward to seeing Highlands and Boyle playing again (other than the traveling part). Talk about a great 4A class with Ft. Thomas, Boyle, Bell, Lone Oak. In order to be the best, you have to beat the best year in and year out. These programs have an awesome fan base and an even more impressive history.

I think that they will. They could win 5 or 6 in a row. And the numbers that I have been seeing is that Bell County will be in 3A not 4A.

I believe you would have to cross out Lone Oak, unfortunately. Aren't they about to go through a merger?

I for one would love to see Highlands move to 4A. That is where they have belonged all this time, IMO. The reason they were in 5A is because they are a NKY team and 5A has alot of NKY teams, including their big rival, Covington Catholic, so that would be less traveling for them. Is that wrong?

Sure, it would be alot of traveling for Highlands if they moved to 4A but I feel that they would benefit from it. Better competition in 4A. Bell County, Boyle County, Highlands and Lexington Catholic. Wow. What a class.

The reason I named Lexington Catholic is because they are traditionally a big time team. Sure, they are going through tough times right now but they will be back on top.

I think you'd be suprised. :sssh:

 To be honest, Ryle didn't impress me all that much. Very one-dimensional and the coach tends to panic when things go slightly off kilter. I'd take a late season matchup against Boyle instead of another with Ryle in a heartbeat. Same goes for Bell, LexCath or Johnson Central.

I think that they will. They could win 5 or 6 in a row. And the numbers that I have been seeing is that Bell County will be in 3A not 4A.

So looks like Highlands drops to 4A, but Bell drops to 3A. Have I ever said I hate the six class system? Highlands, Boyle, and Bell in the same class would be a decent start, but alas, with six classes they can't stay together.

This is correct. As of this past Friday, the KHSAA reclassification 1st draft copy has Bell Cty in 3A. Too bad, we miss Pine Mountain!!!! Go Birds 20n10
