What Is It About 20-Somethings?

Featured Replies

I don't know how it was back then, but being a recent college grad (May 09), I can tell you the one night stands are still very common and accepted. I think Habib's post is spot on.

Oh yeah...definitely. Not that we know from experience or anything lol.

I don't know about that.

There was a time when a very avg. looking person could go out and have a "one night stand" EVERY night they chose to.

Now you better have a lot of money, be extremely popular, extremely good looking, or just be that good. I'm not talking about falling into a "one night stand" every other Thursday............

That can still happen these days.

All a person needs is a) confidence, and b) the ability to talk some game and they'll succeed almost every time.

Pretty much agree with your view. Do you see this as problematic or just a simple rift in what used to be the norm?

I think some things are problematic, but I think most will work themselves out as time goes along. I think the economic situation is the most difficult to correct, especially considering that there are likely going to be far more college graduates than jobs for an indefinite time.

I agree with everything except the last paragraph. From my experience, the generation coming of age during the latter stages of the sexual revolution, in the 70's and early 80's, was as, if not more, promiscuous than today's youth. One night stands were common and accepted during that time, by both men and women. AIDS came along and changed everything.

To me, the first 2 points are what make the difference now.

I can't say which generation is more promiscuous, but my point is that 20-somethings today are both promiscuous at high rates and see it as an end-goal. I think there are less people, especially men, looking for long-term partners and thus less maturing until later in life, i.e. one doesn't have to mature to find a partner when they can get what they want weekend by weekend.

Hence my point. Promiscuity then is as it is now. In other words there is no difference. Therefore, my point cancels Habib's paragraph and my disagreement with it stands the test of reasoning.

I knew that philosophy course I took at Marquette would come in handy for something, sometime. :D

Of course I would formulate this post as Habib was making the post before it.

Hate it when the air in my ego gets deflated. :D

I would say that is a little extreme but I guess a lot of it depends on what kind of places you go to.

Don't forget c) alcohol.

Got this in an email this morning.

Guys Fairy Tale

Once upon a time, a Prince asked a beautiful Princess... Will you marry me?

The Princess said NO!

And the Prince lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and went fishing

and hunting and played golf and dated women half his age and drank beer and

scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up.

The End

That is awesome.

I think a most of our "failure to launch" children are a product of their upbringing. My children and their generation have had so many more things handed to them and were raised in an "everyone is a winner" environment. I am as guilty as most parents of this. As a kid, my parents provided basic clothes, food and a home. We got presents for holidays and birthdays. I bought my own prom dresses, my own car, and anything special I wanted. We had to get jobs as soon as we were old enough to babysit and do chores at home as well. We were held personally responsible for our behavior and there were no excuses. I just dont see that in todays teens/young adults.

Of course, when you make generalizations like that about any group, there are plenty of exceptions, so dont beat up on me too badly. However, I think my generation and those before me were more mature and responsible at a younger age because we were raised that way.

On the positive side, I am glad to see that girls are encouraged to further their education and become financially stable in their own right. In our day, that idea was just taking off. I do remember a time when a girl was supposed to find a suitable husband to take care of here forever. We all know THAT didnt work out for a lot of women.
