August 19, 201016 yr Cowherd is hard to listen to, at least for me. Has nothing to do with his Reds comment. But the chick he does SportsNation with, Michelle Beadle, I find to be SMMMMMMMokin' hot!
August 19, 201016 yr Correct. He obviously can't evaluate intangibles . However its hard to argue the following: Cards 5 - 10 Phillies 2 - 5 How do we beat those teams in a short series? The Reds lost 3 games to the Phillies by a total of 4 runs. All 3 losses were "walk off" losses, too. P-Doc has done a pretty good job of rebutting Cowherd, who I cannot stand. I have not liked Cowherd for a few years now. This whole mess with the Reds started around the All-Star break when Votto was not originally on the team.
August 19, 201016 yr Paul Daugerty's "The Morning Line" for the past 3 days: http://cincinnati.com/blogs/daugherty/2010/08/17/the-morning-line-817/ http://cincinnati.com/blogs/daugherty/2010/08/18/the-morning-line-818/ http://cincinnati.com/blogs/daugherty/2010/08/19/the-morning-line-819/
August 19, 201016 yr They probably couldn't beat the Phillies in a playoff series. They couldn't play the Cards until the NLCS. I'd say if they make it and play the Braves, Pads, or Giants they have a shot to reach the NLCS. If they make the playoffs it's a great season. They are a really good LF and an Ace away from competing with the Cards. They are a little more away from competing w/ the Phillies, Rays, Red Sox, and Rangers. I don't think they're a fraud, but they aren't elite yet either. I do agree with him that they're built for the regular season. They have the pitching to compete for a few more regular seasons. I'll take my chances that Walt makes them better by next year and the year after.

Didn't they add Oswalt since then?
August 19, 201016 yr The Reds' Record against the divisions: v. NL East - 17-15 v. NL Central - 34-21 v. NL West - 10-8 v. AL - 8-7 The Cardinals' Record: v. NL East - 15-9 v. NL Central - 30-24 v. NL West - 11-14 v. AL - 9-6

August 19, 201016 yr Outside of the argument that Votto is a product of GABP what research didn't he do as PDoc claims? I'm not buying the argument that a "fraud" can be 3 games in 1st place in mid-August. At what point does the fraud become real? I have heard Cowherd say that the Reds won't compete because they don't have "power pitchers", which win in the playoffs. I'd consider Volquez & Cueto "power pitchers" who have the ability to rack up 10 K's on any given night (Cueto has backed off of this a bit, though). I agree that the Reds are better suited for the regular season schedule than a post-season schedule. If the Reds want to make a serious run IN the playoffs (as opposed to being happy that we're there), then Volquez has to be our #1 starter.
August 19, 201016 yr Cowherd has also said that the Reds don't have any playoff experience. If you look around the field, you've got Rolen, Cabrera, Gomes, & Edmonds...and Dusty Baker.
August 19, 201016 yr Author I'm not buying the argument that a "fraud" can be 3 games in 1st place in mid-August. At what point does the fraud become real? He addressed that point. He says the very definition of fraud is a team in first place as a result of their schedule and their lack of success against good teams.

Of course he has a month to get there but....
August 19, 201016 yr SSC and I agree. Take note of the date for posterity sake. So is Cowherd saying the Reds aren't a WS contender or a playoff contender? If it's the latter, he's an idiot, regardless of what his stats say. You can't say they aren't a playoff team because they can't beat 3 teams in the league when there are 12 other teams in the league to beat. If he's saying the Reds are a fraud because they can't win the WS he should lump in the other 6 teams that are in first or second in their division that have no chance at winning it. Regardless of Cowherd's problem with Cincy sports, I'm having a hell of a lot of fun.
