August 19, 201016 yr I will be leaving St Augustine tomorrow and would like any recommendations on which interstates to use to get back home. On the way down we made a stop in Savannah for a night but on the way home I'd like the most efficient route. Mapquest and yahoo seem to be taking me up the coast I95 then taking I26 through Columbia up into Tennessee. When I look at a map it seems like heading North on state roads then connecting to I75 through Atlanta would be shorter. Any opinions?

I would hit 75. we came home from Fla on the route you are talking about, and it was fine until it took us off 26 and onto I believe 40. I may be wrong the route #, but it was the expressway in Tenn. that experienced the major mud slide last winter. Only one lane was open and trafic was horrendous. According to the GPS it cost us 95 minutes. When your driving straight through from Cocoa, 95 minutes is a hassle.

Back in July I traveled from Dublin, GA to Jacksonville via GA state highways to Waycross and then on US. 1 to Jacksonville. It is a lot less miles, however, I don't think that I really saved any time. I would probably suggest taking I-10 out of Jacksonville to I-75 up through Atlanta. If your like me a go 80 to 90 on the interstate I think it will be faster in the long run. However, I did enjoy the drive along U.S. 1. Get the feel of "Old Florida" before the intersates with the roadside produce stands etc. Sometimes you miss a lot on the interstate.
August 19, 201016 yr My parents live in Jacksonville and I drive there at least twice a year. If it were me I would take I-10 from Jax to I-75 N and just stay on 75 the rest of the way to the NKy area. When coming to Louisville I exit 75 in Chatanooga and take 24 to Nashville then 65 to Louisville.
August 19, 201016 yr If you veer over to Georgia through Atlanta, you can "fly" through South Georgia...it was like the autobahn. Bad news is it can take a long time to get through Atlanta. So if you can schedule Atlanta in the off hours, I would recommend this route.
August 19, 201016 yr My parents have lived in St. Augustine for 26 years, and we have driven via I-75 and also through Savannah, Columbia, Charlotte, Beckley WVa, etc. My personal preference is that if traveling at night, take I-75. The Atlanta area is much less congested in the middle of the night and there is no need to take the bypass. Otherwise, I prefer the second option - much nicer scenery, and it's only abut 8 miles longer (Maysville to St. Augustine.)
August 19, 201016 yr May want to check the construction on I-10 just west of Jacksonville, between there and Baldwin. When I was up there last fall they had it torn up. Don't know if they are done yet.
August 20, 201016 yr Author Thanks for the input, I will likely go the I10/75 route, will Atlanta be a bear at 2pm? Is the bypass recommended? I hate to.leave this place, I love it here.

If you are going through Atlanta on a weekday, 2 PM is the beginning of the afternoon rush. Take the by-pass. On Saturdays and Sundays, taking I-75 through downtown isn't bad, depending on when the Braves play. As mcpapa mentioned, if there is a way to go through Atlanta after 10 PM, I'd do that.
August 20, 201016 yr Author Hit the bypass at 230p with no problems. Once we connected to 75 N it slowed to.a crawl, we we' re in the clear at 345p. Just stopped at a rest area in N Georgia and while in the stall I couldn't help but to think of Seabass.

Several years ago we got slowed down around Marietta and wound up spending the night in a town called Cartersville. Very nice place.

When I was a little shaver, we used to drive from Maryland to Boynton Beach, Florida via US 1. First day got us to Myrtle Beach, second day got us to St. Augustine. I've had fond memories of the place for 50 years. Now that my parents have retired there, I like it even better. 40 miles from Jax, 55 from Daytona, a little over an hour from inland "Old Florida". They have a pretty big house with a nice pool. Our typical day when we visit is to go to the beach fairly early; around 9:30 or so - stay about 3 hours, clean off, head on a trip to town to one of the local eateries for lunch, come back and hit the pool. I'll try to post a pic or two of my parents' place.
August 20, 201016 yr Instead of heading a few miles north to St. Augustine Beach, we head a couple miles south to Crescent Beach. You can drive on the beach, and this is about as crowded as it gets at 10 in the morning.
