July 15, 201016 yr So, no one that's out of a job is because they're lazy? As it is with most things, the answer lies somewhere in the middle. Lots of people out of work are joyfully that way, while many others are pulling their hair out because they've been out of work so long.
July 15, 201016 yr I see what you mean. In my scenario, however, people actually showed up for the in-person interviews (about a dozen different people, by my count), and of the overqualified people — many of whom I knew personally — likely all would've taken the job, had it been offered. I agree that some people would gladly take a position they are overqualified. I personally know of some that have turned down jobs b/c they were making a little more on UE. I'm sure some HR people are getting tired of offering jobs to overqualified people and being turned down. In fact I've talked to an HR person in my company that quit offering positions to those people b/c of it. I know the job situation is bad now, but it's a little too easy for some people to just get a check to sit home when they could be working

Notice that the lowest bracket represents a 50% rate increase? Still, I don't see it happening. Changes will be made, at least on the bottom side.

Those are what happen if the Bush tax expire just the way they are. Pure speculation on your part.

That's the circumstance a good buddy of mine is in — he was IT security at Humana making great money, and was among their first waves of layoffs. Sure, he could go to work at a Best Buy installing hard drives and memory in new computers for people, as that's certainly well within his expertise. But would you do that? I can certainly understand why he hasn't.

Hell it could happen to me tomorrow, who knows. But at some point the UE has to stop. The money isn't in unlimited supply. This country is broke and it is only getting worse. I'm not sure what the answer is.

I can certainly understand why he hasn't. I wouldn't tell my buddy to take that job and that is the problem. It's too easy to not take a job b/c UE is too easy. There are too many people that think working at Best Buy is below them.

If you believe it's unlimited supply, then you are misinformed. Once a person hits 99 weeks, they fall off the cliff. Done. This latest extension did NOT extend anyone beyond 99 weeks.
