July 2, 201016 yr I still think that the Bush administration could have made a quicker, better response to Katrina, given the advance warning. I was driving through Mississippi on the Saturday after Katrina hit, six days after she hit the shoreline. There were still National Guard units on the side of the highway gathering to deploy, something that could have been done days earlier. Of course, when the person in charge of the federal response to the disaster didn't know tens of thousands of people were trapped in the Superdome almost two weeks after the storm you get the feeling it wasn't a particularly high priority for the government.
July 2, 201016 yr Author I thought you actually made that word up until I found it in Urban Dictionary.
July 3, 201016 yr Yet you lay no blame at the feet of those that didn't heed the warning themselves.I didn't absolve them of any blame, either. Nevertheless, the government could have acted much quicker than it did, given the advance warning. Obama should have acted much quicker than he did. He now has a sore tookus.Again, if Obama had tried to take charge of the situation, he would have been vilified for that, too.

And no matter what Bush would have done or how quickly he would of acted he would have been vilified as well. Right?

Seems I recall that the administration offered and were turned down.
July 4, 201016 yr And no matter what Bush would have done or how quickly he would of acted he would have been vilified as well. Right?By some, sure. Certainly not by me.
July 4, 201016 yr Author By some, sure. Certainly not by me.Then we can agree on something, however, I'd say it would more than some.
July 4, 201016 yr If the Bush administration had been prepared to act from the time Katrina blew through New Orleans and acted accordingly, I don't see how any alleged vilification of him would have been justified. As it was, they were clearly not prepared to act quickly and decisively, an even worse thing given the advance notice.

How a leader acts is important during a national crisis, thus far I'm neither impressed or comforted by his example of leadership. I pray he's never really tested, for our sake.

Seriously, what was Obama supposed to do about the oil spill? Could have have stopped it? As far as the underwear bomber ... he is in custody and reportedly has done some singing to the feds. What else are we supposed to do with him?
July 5, 201016 yr Author Seriously, what was Obama supposed to do about the oil spill? Could have have stopped it? As far as the underwear bomber ... he is in custody and reportedly has done some singing to the feds. What else are we supposed to do with him? Seriously, he could have done a lot. Like get more skimmers in the area right away just for beginners. How long was it that he did nothing? If the President has been there from day one and doing everything he can to solve this issue, why is it taking so long for action to happen, when ideas have been available? I think it's quite telling when the likes of James Carville slams Obama on the oil the spill. Carville himself said " it just looks like he's not involved in this". Carville also said "The President of the United States could have come down here. He could have been involved with the families of these 11 people. He could have commandeered the things. We could have sent the Woods Hole people. He could have sent the Scripps on research vessels in the Gulf of Mexico. He could have implemented a plan in anticipation of this. You know, right, he can't exactly fill the hole up. He could be commandeering tankers and making BP bring tankers in and clean this up. They could the deploying people to the coast right now. He could be deploying people to the coast. He could be with the corps of engineers and the Coast Guard with these people in Plaquemines Parish, doing something about these regulations. These people are crying. They're begging for something down here". Even Carville knew he waited too long to pull the trigger. When Katrina hit, it was up to the local and state governments to have a plan of action for the hurricane. The state of Louisiana failed tremendously. It wasn't Bush's fault, but since you didn't like him, you'll blame him for it. Oddly enough though, you get indignant when I or someone else faults Obama for his lack of leadership in recent events. You simply don't want to afford Obama the same treatment you did Bush. Obama's slowness to make a decision is rather concerning at the least.

I agree that Obama could have done more commiserating (sp) with the suffering. But the skimmers are not going to help much since the oil is in plumes under the water. NO ONE has come up yet with a silver bullet to solve any of the issues that are going on in the gulf. There currently is no solution.

In many ways, local and state governments were crippled by the storm. It was up to the federal government to provide as much relief as possible, but it was apparent that it wasn't prepared, despite the advance warning. I call it as I see it. I didn't like Bush, but I don't judge the guy based on whether I like him. I judge him based on what I see of his policies and actions, and let's face it ... Katrina wasn't the first major situation that was mishandled by the Bush administration. Iraq was clearly another. I'm not absolving of Obama of anything. But it's clear that he while he could have jumped in right away, he deferred to BP, believing it had the technology and ability to handle the spill. Bottom line ... I don't see that Obama could have done anything to prevent what has happened in the Gulf, given that the oil is still flowing into the ocean. As I've said, if he had gotten involved from the start, he would be harshly criticized for interfering with business and committing government resources when they may not have been needed. I dare say you would have taken that position, too. I'm not indignant about anything. I simply asked a question. Thanks for the response. You simply don't want to afford Obama the same treatment you did Bush. Obama's slowness to make a decision is rather concerning at the least. I haven't exactly been glowing about the Obama administration's handling of events, either. I guess it's just easy or convenient for you to just lump me in the pro-Obama camp.
