West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd, the longest-serving member of Congress has passed away. He was 92.

Any idea as to the process by which the remainder of his term is filled?

Doesn't the Governor appoint a replacement?

I believe so. That's what got Governor Blagojevich canned over Obama's replacement.

It varies by state. Remember the debacle in Mass. to replace Kennedy? There for years the governor appointed a replacement Senator then while Romney was governor the Dem. controlled state legislature changed the law calling for a special election, then when Kennedy dies and a rubber stamp , err replacement, was needed to vote in favor of Obamacare the legislature once again changed the law to allow the then Dem. governor to name a replacement that would serve until the special election could be held.

 

As far as Byrd goes my father once told me if you can't say something nice don't say anything.

I kinda feel sorry, just a bit, for the cons. No more Robert "he was in the KKK" Byrd to kick around any more.

He was 12 terms past his prime. RIP Mr. Byrd.
