June 16, 201016 yr Author Does this strengthen the conference? Right away, not a whole lot. It does get them to 10 football schools and there are rumors out there that TCU and Houston might be the next in line to get the football side to 12. Adding Orlando, Dallas, Houston and Memphis is a lot of TV sets added to the huge league footprint...
June 16, 201016 yr Does this do anything to push the non-basketball schools into their own conference? It seems like 20 schools might be a rather unwieldy combination.
June 16, 201016 yr Author Does this do anything to push the non-basketball schools into their own conference? It seems like 20 schools might be a rather unwieldy combination. There isn't much out there yet on how the hoops schools feel about all of this. With Tags spearheading things, I would have to think the plan is for them to stick around...
June 17, 201016 yr I have heard Memphis talk a lot lately. Now with FedEx pushing the Tigers and they are a BCS sponsor, this is a smart move to try and lock down a BCS bid for the Big East when the contract comes back up. I think UCF would be a good fit. Would like to see them go after ECU. I know it doesnt do much for TV but I think they could add to the conference.
June 17, 201016 yr They need to go after TCU hard.... they should be licking their chops for the frogs.
June 17, 201016 yr I somewhat like the move, but hate the vast number of basketball schools. If I were the Big East, I think you'd have to keep the traditional basketball schools, such as Georgetown, 'Nova, Seton Hall, St. John's, and Providence....I would drop Marquette and DePaul, at this point they're not bringing much to the table......If they do that, they could try to stay around 20 teams in league, and grow football as close to 12 as possible.
June 17, 201016 yr Author 12 football schools plus the 8 basketball only schools already in place equals 20...
June 17, 201016 yr They need TCU. Houston would be a nice addition. Memphis and UCF do nothing to improve the level of play on the field though IMO.

I would drop them all. Nova, G-town, and Marquette would hurt basketball wise, the rest bring are a downslides they might not come out of.
June 17, 201016 yr I would drop them all. Nova, G-town, and Marquette would hurt basketball wise, the rest bring are a downslides they might not come out of. It will be really difficult for the Big East to expel schools like Villanova, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, and St. John's. They were charter members instrumental in the development of the conference. In my opinion if those schools leave the Big East it will be on their own terms - not because the league give them the boot in order to bring in a couple more football schools.
June 17, 201016 yr UCF would be a lot like USF and UC when they made the BCS move. Recruiting will see a big jump for a program already in a recruiting hot bed... It would be remiss not to mention that both UC and USF had great coaches come through, though. And between the Big 3, USF, and other schools with their hands in Florida's hotbed I don't know how much UCF's recruiting could improve that much. Bama is recruiting Florida really well over the last few years, WVU and Ohio State are penetrating in, and U of L and even Marshall will start to make an impact there IMO because of their coaches. I just don't think they are the sleeping giant that USF has the potential to be. JMO.
