New York, New York a heckuva town......

Featured Replies

Going to take the family to NY City for the first time, for four days, obviously I want to find a great pizza place but what else should be on our "gotta do" list?

The wife and daughter have put Wicked on the list already, yikes.

Any other suggestions will be much appreciated.

Can a mod clean up this title?

What would you like it cleaned up to say? I will change it to heckuva until I hear from you.

Well one thing I would suggest is to take one of the bus tours. You get to scope everything out and learn alot of the history about the city.

I've never been a fan of the Empire State Building. I guess you kind of have to do it, but I always hate going.

As for food, any time you sit down to eat it's going to be expensive so you might as well go nice with it.

I'm not a Broadway kind of guy, but it's a good time.

What kind of things are you wanting to get into? I've been a few times, so I've done plenty of family oriented things there and adult fun.

Ellis Island, Ground Zero, The Met, Little Italy, Chinatown, A Broadway Show, Central Park, Radio City, Times Square, Grand Central Station, Macy's, The Diamond District, Yankees or Mets game, soooooooo much to see.

The wife and I are going to New York the week covering July 4. We're really looking forward to it. We're big baseball fans and are going to both a Yankees game and a Mets game. We also intend to go to a Broadway play - if you don't have any strong feelings about which play to see, you can go to the TKTS Booth in Times Square the for "day of show" tickets that are priced from 30-50% off the regular price. We are also planning to go to Coney Island for the Hot Dog Eating Contest and also attending a taping of the Daily Show.

My wife and daughter seem to be thinking shop till you drop. My son and I will be looking for adventure. He is 15.

Then everyone should be happy. There is plenty of shopping and even you and you son could find plenty of good items. But if you head out looking for adventure then you will be successful as well. Honestly, there are a million things to do - you could spend a lifetime there and not see everything. I would plan on one "big" thing a day (baseball game, play, museum visit, etc.) and then mix-and-match with whatever you want beyond that.

I might even snap a few pictures! Who knows?

Grimaldi's in Brooklyn Heights. It was the best pizza I've ever had there. The lines will be out the door all day long. It's THAT good.

If you like Chinese, I highly recommend a place that I think was called Vanessa's Dumpling House. It's on Eldridge Street in the middle of Chinatown. Have the sesame bread sandwich. I thought the duck was awesome. I was completely full for less than $5.

The best view of the city is not from the airplane or the top of the Empire State Building, but from the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge. Take a walk out there just before the sun goes down... unbelievable view from lower Manhattan up through midtown.

Stop by Columbus Circle and just sit there for a few minutes one night. The place is surrounded by fountains and you almost forget that you're sitting in the middle of an astoundingly busy roundabout. And there was at least one street musician there both times I did this. I love street musicians. It's like ambiance for the sidewalk.

If you're into history, the Museum of the City of New York is pretty great. Make sure they've got the movie up and running or there isn't necessarily a whole lot to see, but it might be worth the trip anyway. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum are also excellent.

If you buy a metrocard to get around on subways and buses for the weekend, don't underestimate how far you can go and how quickly. On my last visit I stayed with a friend in Harlem way up on 149th Street and was amazed at how easy it was to get around. You can be from uptown to Queens in not much more than 20 minutes. I think a lot of tourists don't necessarily leave midtown or lower Manhattan, but there is definitely plenty to see and do in Brooklyn and Queens if you don't mind riding the subway across the river. It's also the best way to not spend an arm and a leg, as there are places in New York where real people -- not trust fund kids -- actually live and so stuff doesn't cost you too much. I swear it's possible to do New York relatively cheap if you make the effort.]

I went on a quest down Sullivan Avenue and saw the spot where Ebbets Field used to stand. Wasn't anything great to see -- it's an apartment building, but I was glad I did it. Also ate at a fantastic Greek restaurant called Opa! in the Greek neighborhood in Astoria, Queens.

To me there are just a few place to go...Yankee Stadium (if you go to no other place, you've gotta do yourself a favor and go see the home of THE greatest sports organization in the world), Grey's Papaya (aa hot dog place), Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs and Katz Deli.

Take a trip to "The Cage" on West 4th Street in Greenwich Village. Fun place to watch basketball. Your son will love it!

Ride the subway. An experience like no other.

There's nothing like walking through Little Italy. Delicious!

What great advice from everyone. Much appreciated and keep them coming. I do already have my theatre tickets. Don't leave until July so I have a little time to plan an agenda, or at least my wife will. Again, thanks BGPrepers for the usual great advice.
