:cry: It's a sad day in baseball....The last of the great clean players has hung it up.

Should have probably happened after last year and his succesful return to Seattle, but a great career nonetheless. Even with all the injuries, he was still one of the greats and will take his proper place in Cooperstown in 5 years.

I feel as though this somewhat marks the end of my childhood lol. I grew up loving me some Griffey Jr. I was extremely excited that he was coming to Cincinnati, and enjoy cheering for him at GABP.

 

Guess I should stop voting for him to make the all-star game lol.

Great career, first ballot HOF'er. Nice to see him not try to hold on any longer. It was time to go. Really bothers me when my memory of great athletes is of their career in decline. It's painful to watch.

I grew up with Griffey, he's been playing for almost all of my lifetime. It's a sad day for me as a sports fan. Griffey was a classy guy, who stayed clean while his peers past him by. There is no doubt in my mind he would have went down as the best player of all-time, even if it was just in my book, had he remained healthy. All of these stars coming into sports now could learn from "The Kid". He was easy to root for, he always had a smile when he played. I guess I'll officially be old when Shaq, Grant Hill and J-Kidd retire.

 

Anyways, Griffey will be missed by this sports fan.

I've always said that when the day comes, no matter what it takes, I'm going to be in Cooperstown for his HOF induction. I can't believe that day has actually come. In a way it kinda marks the end of an era. He was/is the last true "great" to play the game...Sure, Pujols and Jeter are still around, but no one has ever made the things he did look so effortless.

He was exceptionally well at pulling up lame in the OF. Did it better than anyone I've witnessed.

You assume he was clean. I'm sure that he is clean but have no proof. Eight years ago, people thought A-Rod was clean. I just hope for his sake nothing comes out that will blindside his HOF path ala McGwire, Sosa, and Clemens.

Doesn't innocent until proven guilty? His name has never been tied to anything. In fact, it is quite the opposite, he is constantly mentioned as one of the players stay clean.

 

Watching the replays of him robbing opposing HR's just makes me smile.

I find it suspicious that Griffey rarely missed playing time in Seattle (except for a broken wrist in 1995) while being a part of a clubhouse that included admitted steroid users Segui, A-Rod, Glenallen Hill, Ryan Franklin and Brett Boone along with several other suspected users such as Jay Buhner.

 

Once he gets to Cincy and away from the Seattle clubhouse -- POOF! He cant stay healthy, his power numbers arent the same (6 of his final 7 seasons in Seattle had 40 + HRs. He hit 40+ in Cincy his first year and that's it), and he never stole more than six bases in a season after leaving Seattle.

 

I just find his post-Seattle numbers suspect, given the culture of steroids in the Seattle clubhouse during those seasons.

Junior was great for the game. I remember when I was like 10 and watching the home run derby when he would turn his hat backwards. He was just fun to watch, and sadly, I don't think baseball will have another like Junior, he was one of a kind...
