I might not like the blind draw but I'd never run up the score just to make a point.

First, who is "they?" Coach/AD/principal? I'm not flat out embarrassing kids just so I can get at an adult whose decision I despise. That's simply immature. Somone has to be the adult. None of those schools are violating KHSAA rules so what gives me the right to show them up?

They vote the same way in every sport. The "adult" at the other school is taking a stand and therefore so would I. Running up the score also isn't a violation of KHSAA rules.

And I am disapointed that the "smaller" schools can't have the common sense to vote to seed. After all they have their own all A tournament now.

Perhaps the biggest problem with this is you are often times creating a disparity in competition and this is particularly evident in baseball. The pitching rotation becomes critically important at this time of year and having a "lesser" team from a district enter the Regional tournament gives an advantage to the team that draws them ( again the draw v. accomplishment being a factor) It is even worse when the "lesser" team is from your District because someone else (from another district) gets your "lesser" runner-up to open in Regionals and gets to save pitching.

 

It's obvious that both sides have an argument as to why to seed v. not seed but shouldn't the accomplishment of the season dictate pairings in a playoff........it does everywhere else in the world?

Not unless there's some new enrollment data out there that I'm not aware of.

 

TOG is right ... based on the current enrollment figures and class system, Highlands is a 4A school. If I remember the numbers right, the cutoff for 4A was around 400 boys and Highlands is at 415.

The voting always has Highlands and NCC voting to seed, and the other three vote not to. Why does NCC vote to seed and Newport doesn't? That is the crux of the question. They are the same size schools. I think it is weak that Newport votes not to seed. Hey the just won the 9th Region basketball crown didn't they. Seeding would put more stock in the regular season.

 

Honestly if they kept voting like that you couldn't really blame NCC or Highlands for "running up the score" then in the regular season could you?

Newport is becoming a smaller school every year and will probably be a single A school in a few years but you never hear anything about Bellevue or Dayton not seeding. Yeah Newport did win the region in basketball "so what" good for them! This just sounds like sour grapes to me and if whatever team you want to win if they are good enough to win they will. There is to much stuff in life to be stressed about for you to be worried over a blind draw. One last thing, it is not the kids fault on this subject but you want run up the score on them!

This is a democracy and the KHSAA has chosen to allow its members to vote seed or draw.........Therefore we must live with the vote.

And actually Highlands and NCC took opposite tactic several years ago and offered money (spilt the regional gate receipts they received with Newport, Bellevue and Dayton) if they would vote to seed.

 

Each school is supposed to do what is best for the teams in their school building not what is best for somebody else.

How many opprtunities do the small schools need? They have their own all"A" tournament, then they turn around and refuse to seed. Becoming close to an "A" school isn't an all "A" school yet. NCC doesn't vote to not seed.

 

Beechwood is an "A' school and somehow they have managed to win the region crown a few times in the last few years.

 

Everybody says it isn't the kids fault, and it isn't, but it also keeps them insulated from the real world. Too much of the "participation ribbon" philosophy for me. It is not life or death, but I tire of the small school whine.

That is not the case and has never been the case. It helps if you know a little something about that of which you speak. Good years or bad years, the same three schools have opposed seeding for far more than the 36th District Tournament in baseball. There are other sports involved as well. The state has chosen to not classify sports such as volleyball, baseball, softball and soccer, which pits schools like Silver Grove in the exact same classification as Trinity, Henry Clay and Henderson County. Whether you want to admit it or not, numbers and "drawing power" (to use the politically correct phrase) make all the difference in the world in each of those sports mentioned. While I have never been a proponent of persecuting private schools, I am not naive enough to think there are not clear-cut advantages. Even more so it is as plain as the nose on anyone's face that larger schools have clear-cut advantages as well (which is the REAL issue that the KHSAA SHOULD spend some efforts on rather than harrassing private schools). Just because your opinion is that seeding is the way to go doesn't mean you are right. For those small schools with the power to give themselves opportunities that other small schools don't have, this IS the correct thing for them to do. Being classless and "running up scores" and the like certainly won't make the choice anymore palatable for either of the parties involved and I am grateful that the coaches involved have more class and more sense than to try something so childish. And by the way, IF there were seeding, it would only mean that 4 out of 36 games have some meaning, it would NOT change the other 88% of the regular season.

Newport does tend to take the blame mainly because they are seen as the largest of those three schools voting not to seed. They are also viewed as the school out of those three that could compete more so than Dayton and Bellevue.

 

 

In reality the coaches have no say in it either. This is an administrative decision coming from either an AD principal or even higher in at least one instance.
