HHS plays NewCath Monday at 5. Winner gets Bellevue Wednesday and District finals are Thursday against Dayton/Newport Winner. Two teams with a combined record of 6 wins and one of them makes the Region tourney. Should be interesting that's for sure!

 

Very unfortunate. And, of course, this is the very reason that these schools continue to vote in favor of the blind draw - it gives them an opportunity to advance in situations they normally would not be able to if the district was seeded LIKE EVERY OTHER DISTRICT IN THE 9TH!

In regards to the "why would they" I agree.

If they seeded, according to KHSAA.org, the draw would presumably look like this:

 

#1 NCC (18-8, 2-1 district) v.

W of #4 Newport (4-18, 1-2) v. #5 Dayton (2-9, 0-2)

 

#2 HHS (10-20, 2-1) v. #3 Bellevue (9-20, 3-2)

 

 

Instead, either the #4 or #5 seed will be in the Regional Tournament.

Honestly the only reason the other districts seed is because those schools are out numbered in the district. This is the one district where they are not outnumbered.

The voting always has Highlands and NCC voting to seed, and the other three vote not to. Why does NCC vote to seed and Newport doesn't? That is the crux of the question. They are the same size schools. I think it is weak that Newport votes not to seed. Hey the just won the 9th Region basketball crown didn't they. Seeding would put more stock in the regular season.

 

Honestly if they kept voting like that you couldn't really blame NCC or Highlands for "running up the score" then in the regular season could you?

I think it's smart for them too. They are doing what is best for their student athletes. What school doesn't? You might not like it, or agree with it, but it's their option. Running up the score should never be an option. That does nothing but embarrass kids.

The KHSAA should mandate how each District seeds their district tourney, IMHO. This way everyone operates with the same set of rules. Problem with sports nowadays is the whole liberal soccer mentality. Everyone should get a chance. Well, everyone gets a chance when they play their district games. Its no different with football playoffs. Just about every school gets to go. It bleeds mediocrity.

Seed or blind draw, it should be consistent throughout the region. I can't see a valid reason not to seed (other than the ol' "it gives the small schools a chance"), but ultimately pick one and make it the same for each district in the region. That, more than anything, is my biggest objection to the 36th's blind draw.

Minor point for clarification. HHS is a 3A school by enrollment that is permitted to play 5A for geographic reasons. I also recall that they used to be a "smallish" 3A school.

I know we are having an honest argument here, but by not seeding I would run up the score in the regular season against those teams, and never once have I said to do that. Maybe running up the score would make the "bigger" schools feel good about themselves. :confused:
