May 6, 201016 yr Plehn's Bakery pretty much trumps everything else. Anyone who has tried it and disagrees is a heathen. :thumb:
May 6, 201016 yr I've always loved a good cinnamon twist donut and Mondelli's in Lexington used to have some dandies.
May 6, 201016 yr Magee's on Orangeburg Road (just outside of Maysville) has been owned by the same family for years. Transparent tarts, red velvet cake are a couple of their specialties. When my son got married on Whidbey Island (WA) a couple of years ago, we brought transparent tarts. The price to ship them was prohibitive, so we took them on the plane. Got a couple of looks when they went through the x-ray machine; I guess the metal tart shells were interesting to the inspectors. Love Magee's, especially the chinese cookies, tea wafers and petit fours. But overall, the best bakery is The Bonbonerie on Madison.:thumb: http://www.bonbonerie.com/
May 6, 201016 yr Yes, Cookie Jar on Monmouth is still there. The bakery on 6th and Overton was Manyet, which I referenced earlier as my favorite bakery. I am so bummed that it is not around anymore. It has been years (decades actually) but I think that is the bakery where we used to get "sloppy cake". Does that sound familiar to anyone? It was a bakery in Newport. Though, I thought it was on Washington or Saratoga, somewhere East of Monmouth. I guess it could have been Overton but I remember the "sloppy cake" bakery being further south than 6th.:idunno:

But overall, the best bakery is The Bonbonerie on Madison.:thumb: http://www.bonbonerie.com/ It doesn't look like they sell any good old fashioned donuts. If I can't get a jelly-filled or a glazed they're out.
May 6, 201016 yr Where is Emerson's? Manyet, my favorite bakery of all time, is no longer around. These days, I go to Bernhard's in Newport on York St. We used to go there all the time on Saturday mornings when I was younger. Now if I even go to one at all its usually just cookie jar but nothing Ive been to since was like Manyet.
May 6, 201016 yr Hadorn's here in Bardstown does a pretty good doughnut. I'll stop by Heitzmann's every now and again for some of that good German salt-rising bread.
June 25, 201016 yr Author Heard good things about Heiztman's in Louisville. I heard wrong. May have to try Plehn's tomorrow.
June 25, 201016 yr Is the Clover Top Bakery in Corbin still open? I loved that place when I was a kid. Down here, nothing tops the Alessi Bakery.
June 25, 201016 yr No comparison to real bakery like Old Latonia Bakery. For real Donuts in NKY I like the little palce in Alexandria, between St Mary ad Brossart, not sure of the name. Both great selections. Makes me want to stop on my way to work tomorrow.
June 25, 201016 yr Is the Clover Top Bakery in Corbin still open? I loved that place when I was a kid. Down here, nothing tops the Alessi Bakery. Swamprat, Clovertop closed several years ago. Mr. Alsip really knew his craft. As a kid, I lived only a a few blocks from the bakery. I would go down there about every day or two and get a caramel donut, a couple of cinnamon twists and a jelly filled or creme-filled donut, all for about a dollar. I also liked going down there at daybreak and getting a half dozen glaze freshly made. They would melt in your mouth. Clovertop was well known for its product.

We really couldn't afford much back then, but every now and then, Mom would come home with a treat from there. I loved the glazed.
