May 3, 201016 yr Scott Rolen & Cabrera have made this lineup much, much better. Even though they're not performing at a very high level, they're professional hitters who are capable of putting the ball in play. When there is a man on 3rd and less than 2 outs, Cabrera gets him in. That was something that really concerned me in prior years... I think I heard Cabrera leads the league in sac flies? Could that be true? Phillips hasn't hit very well in the 2-hole, but I think it makes us much more dangerous offensively. Hanigan has been great behind the dish. Hernandez makes the big bucks and can contribute, but Hanigan has been on fire. He's on base exactly 50% of the time & you simply cannot leave that out of the lineup.
May 3, 201016 yr I heard an interesting spin the other day on the radio. The subject was that of the Reds core nucleus. I can't remember who was speaking on the subject, but they were talking about how the core has been considered, Votto, Phillips, and Bruce. He said the thinking now is that Phillips is no longer considered in that group and that he will be gone by the trade deadline, and that Todd Frazier will be at 2nd for the Reds. Thoughts?
May 3, 201016 yr Author It's an odd, but easily overlooked stat. I believe Cabrera has had around 40 SAC flies in the last 5 years. If the stats are right, the league leader each year has around 10-15, so if Orlando keeps with his average of about 8. He would be near the top. According to Baseball-Almanac.com, Gil Hodges in 1954 holds the all time record for sac flies in a season with 19 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Andre Dawson had 18 in 1983 with the Expos. Bobby Bonilla had 17 with the Orioles in 1996.

Salaries of $2.75M in 2008, $4.75M in 2009, $6.75M in 2010, $11M in 2011, and a team option for $12M in 2012. Brandon is a career .260 hitter. He did hit .290 in 2007 and .275 last year. He will get between 20-30 home runs and we know he is solid in the field. He has played at least 150 games in 3 of his 4 years with the Reds. The other year he played 141. His attitude problems on the field have been well documented. So with all that into consideration, I would say he is worth 11 or 12 million. He doesn't turn 30 until June of next year. So maybe after this contract is up, that will start the debate if he is still here.

Can't say I agree as I would prefer Dusty get moved. BP loafs a lot, that much is sure. I have been an advocate of trading Phillips for a few years now. I remember getting lambasted both on and off BGP for the idea.
May 3, 201016 yr Where have you heard or read that Dusty would like to see BP moved? The discussion was on the radio Saturday, I think. I can't remember who was talking about it, and only caught a snippet, as the 17 year old daughter doesn't seem to appreciate AM sportstalk.
