April 2, 201016 yr Story This is a really stupid idea. I'd be willing to bet that we'll never see a JCPS girls' team win a state championship again.
April 2, 201016 yr I'd be willing to bet that one of the "higher ups" had a son or daughter who got less playing time because a middle school kid played up.
April 2, 201016 yr I don't see how this is legal. There is a KRS that states that no one outside of the Ky board of education or its agency (that might mean the JCPS could do it) can restrict anyone 4th grade and up from trying out for a varsity team.
April 2, 201016 yr This justifies the move: “Seventh-grade girls and boys are having different conversations than high school girls and boys,” Vinegar said. “We want our kids to learn to grow at that level. Playing sports should be a smooth transition, not a shock.”

April 4, 201016 yr Anybody realize how many kids play in the girls high school golf championship and contend/win it.
April 4, 201016 yr Anybody realize how many kids play in the girls high school golf championship and contend/win it. A bunch. Lydia Gumm qualified for the state golf tournament as a 3rd grader.
April 4, 201016 yr Seems to me that if middle school children make a varsity team, that gives an opportunity for other middle school children to make middle school teams. Then more kids could play. I have to agree with LBBC, it will be interesting to see if JCPS can actually make that rule.
April 4, 201016 yr Does anyone know how many middle school age girls started or played significant minutes on state tournment basketball teams this season? It was quite a few. This is an silly rule made by someone that has zero experence with athletics. Don't worry l-ville I don't think this will last long, but I believe it's illegal. No way can the school district make a rule like this and have it stick.

I believe it says that a middle school player can move up but they must start varsity.

No way can the school district make a rule like this and have it stick. I know very little about the application of allowing MS kids to play HS varsity in Jefferson County. I never even knew it was a possibility anywhere in the state until the Iroquois HS girls basketball team had to use middle schoolers just to have enough to have a team. Until then, I had no idea it was even possible for any sport, or any team.

April 4, 201016 yr My son is a legit 8th grader (Never been held back) and he starts for his varsity baseball team. He starts at second base and hits lead off. He is not starting on a team that needs to bring up middle kids. He starts over two seniors and several freshman. His team is currently 5-4. He is hitting .300 + with 5 rbi's. Why would you punish a kid with the talent to play a varsity sport because of his age? If a kid works hard enough and delevopes the ability to play at that level they should be allowed to play!!!! Just looking at it from my personal point of view, what would my son gain from another year of middle school baseball?
