The 96-team tournament would likely envelop the 32-team NIT, though Shaheen said no decision has been made on what to do with the NCAA's other, independently operated season-ending tournament.

The new format would start two days later than the current 65-team field because it would eliminate the Tuesday play-in game and would conclude on the same day, a Monday. It would be played at one fewer venue -- again, the play-in game -- and the NCAA says it would include no additional travel time for teams.

The first-round games for the 32 non-bye teams would take place on Thursday and Friday, with the winners playing the top eight seeds in each region on Saturday and Sunday. Winners on Saturday would likely play again on Tuesday, and the Sunday winners on Wednesday.

Those winners would then move on to the regionals, playing alternate days starting on Thursday. Shaheen said the NCAA hasn't decided on whether to keep the same sites for second and first-round games or to make the midweek sites the same as the regionals.

He also said the amount of time student-athletes would be out of school would be roughly the same as the current model, but teams that play in the opening round and keep winning would actually be out an entire week of school instead of just a few days.

"On a 96-team basis -- vs. the current 97 teams that the NCAA conducts through the championship and the NIT, for example -- you have, on a side-by-side basis, a reduction in the travel time," Shaheen said

Does that mean a 17-16 Carolina gets into the tournament?

Yup.

Is this argument supposed to sway me from agreeing to this format? Because it sure as hell isn't working.

The people running the NCAA need to be fired... all of them.

The writing was on the wall when the NCAA took over the NIT. It was only a matter of negotiating a new TV deal before it gained momentum. Hate it all you want. It's happening...

Was it broken when expanded before? MORE BASKETBALL. Sign me up...

I didnt' pay attention when they expanded before.

And it doesn't seem like more basketball to me? Its the same amount of basketball as now...just all in one tournament instead of two.

I wouldn't have liked this last year when UK was in the NIT and I don't like it now.

While there are good points and bad points about the whole argument, there's really only one thing that I think people are ultimately going to be concerned about...and that's being able to fill out a bracket. As long as teams are put on a one-way path with known possible opponents ahead of them, most people won't care. Now, if they did a floating bracket like the NFL, then utter confusion would ensue and people would be ticked off.

Looks like that will not be an issue. One round added and the top 8 seeds get a first round bye. The 2nd week will go from Tuesday to Sunday? Yes please...

Then it's going to be like baseball adding the DH or the wildcard...the purists will hate it and complain...the rest of the world will move on with it without any problem.

But, since they're making changes, I would like to see them go with the suggestion that the regular season conference champions get an automatic berth. I don't like the prospect that somebody can salvage a horrid season by winning 3 or 4 games in a conference tournament. Heck, I'd even go for having more inter-conference games...ACC playing the SEC or Big East taking on the Big 10, etc....and dropping the conference tourneys all together.

John Feinstein had the fellow on the run today and he would not answer the question about the student athletes missing an entire week of school because of the new format.

It is simply a money grab.

It also contradicts their statement in college football with their excuse for not having a playoff saying it would keep kids out of classes. What a bunch of hypocrites.
