The NCAA has zero say over a playoff in football, and have use the missing class excuse to save face for the sake of covering their tails on the real problem. College Presidents and Conference higher ups hold all the cards in football, and will not let a playoff happen because that means they have to allow the NCAA to put their big fat hands in the billion plus cookie jar. That makes the basketball tournament the cash cow. The dots aren't hard to connect...
April 2, 201016 yr Not a fan. As someone else said it will make the regular season less relevant. We're going to have teams with 6-10 conference records get into the tourney. Dreadful.

I would also like to see the requirement that no teams with losing records get in (but I'm sure that won't happen, since the selection committee is always stocked with BCS conference representatives).

My mistake; I thought I had read otherwise about this year's group. With that the case, the mid-major committee members need to speak out a lot more about some of the early-round matchups.

April 2, 201016 yr 96 teams in a seeded tournament.......How bad are some of those first and second round games going to be? It's one thing to place a 30 win Murray State up against a power conference school, but with 96 teams there will be plenty of .500 or sub .500 teams in the field. I would have to check, but I believe that there are only 212 D-1 schools. The NCAA is basically letting 50% of the schools in. I'm all for more baskeball, but not this. This is going to be bad basketball. If this is about a cash grab (which it is) I'd rather see the NCAA go to a 32 team double elimination tournament. At least all 32 teams would have winning records.

The only way a sub .500 team gets in stays the same in that they win their conference tournament. It's taking the NIT field and adding it to the NCAA field. Current 9-16 seeds play the NIT field for the next round while the top 8 seeds in every region get a one round bye...

Sorry for the mis information. Still just curious as to how many NIT teams were sub .500 in their conference. IDK this just doesn't feel right. Maybe I'm just resistant to change?

I get the dislike of change, but if given the chance to watch the NCAA Tournament for 9 out of 10 days full blast I'm not going to complain. Granted that is the view from a guy willing to spend the large part of 3 months on the road watching AAU games from sunrise to sunset while driving 5-10 hours to the tournaments in between for what amounts to pennies on the hour. Most don't like the idea of the field of 64 expanding to include the NIT. I get that. It's not going to sway me one bit from watching every game I can get my eyes on. I'm in the minority for now. That's fine by me as well...

I coach a team, and between my own games and scouting other teams in the region I bet I see at least 100 high school games per year. I do the AAU thing as well. Two of my girls are playing in an AAU tournament in Louisville this weekend. I love good baskeball as much as the next person. My biggest concern is that the NCAA is going to screw up and give us bad hoops that first weekend. I hope not though:idunno:

Expansion to 96 is going to happen, and I'll gladly keep an open mind...

Expansion to 96 is going to happen, and I'll gladly keep an open mind... I am not saying I am for it, but I certainly do not believe it will have the dark effect many are believing it will. The new format will be talked about for a year or so, then it will be second nature. As I have said before, the NCAA tournament is an inverted pyramid of excitement. We all say we enjoy Cinderella, but in reality we want to see the heavyweights in the ring. The numbers bear that out. Upsets are cute the first week or so, but beyond that I like to see the big boys duke it out and not be left with George Mason in the Final Four. Essentially this new format gives us an extra one day of the first week of the tournament, which to virtually everyone is the most exciting time of the tournament.
