April 1, 201016 yr Pressure from the media, groups picketing, there's lots of legal ways but people have to want to fight and organize. Just doesn't seem they have the backbone anymore. Everyone is too willing be treated like a child it seems. People will stand up and fight when they need to or want to but smoking is just a poor example of this! Even in Ky the percentages of adults who smoke is just getting smaller and smaller and elsewhere in the USA the numbers are so low, it's no longer an issue!

Even in Ky the percentages of adults who smoke is just getting smaller and smaller and elsewhere in the USA the numbers are so low, it's no longer an issue!Sure, because as per the example in the article and all the nanny state nonsense that's gone on, they're treated like lepers. It's pathetic.
April 1, 201016 yr It's cool if you don't agree, I'm totally understanding to what you and everyone is saying about the employer having the right to set policy. It's just that when I was younger, people were treated better than this. I find it sad we're moving in the direction we are. I'm struggling with this one RTS. I believe PRIVATE businesses should be able to hire whoever they think is valuable to them. If people think businesses don't discriminate when hiring they have blinders on. Hooters will not give me a second look if I want to wait tables for them, but Chip-n-Dales (Spelling?) won't stop calling me. An owner of a Christian book store is not going to hire the local satan worshiper, even if he's the most qualified...Not good for business. At the same time, I think PRIVATE businesses should not have to provide employees with anything other than a paycheck...If you don't like it don't apply. I most certainly don't think the government should tell PRIVATE employers to furnish anything other than a paycheck. As far as smoking goes, it's slippery my friend. I personally think it's going too far to exclude someone for smoking at home. I don't like it, but quite frankly, If I don't want to hire a smoker, I shouldn't have to.
April 1, 201016 yr Again, at home...not at work....a code of conduct can, and usually does, cover any behavior or condut, no matter where you are, even at home. There have been teachers who have lost their teaching certificate that is issued by the STATE GOVERNMENT for too many DUI's. NONE involving being at school or on school time.
April 1, 201016 yr People should also have the right to smoke in their own home since it's a legal activity. It's a very overreaching policy. TEchnically, the hospital is not saying you cannot. Just saying if you do, work for someone else. It is up to the person to decide whether working at the hospital or smoking at home is more important to them.
April 1, 201016 yr People should also have the right to smoke in their own home since it's a legal activity. It's a very overreaching policy. So do you feel it's wrong for companies to police employees facebook pages?
April 1, 201016 yr Personally, since I'm a non smoker, I really could care less. Those people should quit anyway, it's a lot healthier.
April 1, 201016 yr Ridiculous policy, but they can implement it if they'd like. :thumb: To cry they shouldn't be allowed to though is every bit as ridiculous as the policy IMO.
April 1, 201016 yr :thumb: To cry they shouldn't be allowed to though is every bit as ridiculous as the policy IMO. No disagreement with that either.
April 1, 201016 yr Author :thumb: To cry they shouldn't be allowed to though is every bit as ridiculous as the policy IMO. They shouldn't be that asinine to make such a policy is the point.
April 1, 201016 yr To me this is discrimination and very stupid. Discrimination against who? Nobody HAS to smoke.
April 1, 201016 yr They shouldn't be that asinine to make such a policy is the point. Then where's the foul? If they make a stupid decison (non government mandated) then they'll suffer the consequences (or benefits) from it. Why should they not have the choice to do so? They aren't telling people that they can't smoke, just that if they do, they can't work for them. No one's rights have been infringed upon. Telling the business that they CAN'T have such a policy would be the true infringement.
April 1, 201016 yr C'mon...Objecting to this is insane! If you are a proponent of business owner's rights, and their right to conduct their business the way they want, the you can NOT be outraged over this! I once was turned down for a job at the Limited because I didn't look like a Limited girl. Swear on my dog. I didn't look the part. I didn't try, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten hired by Hooters either.
