RTS I worked for a company that banned their employees from not only smoking on the job but at home and this was in 1978. If you smoked you had one year to quit or lose your job! Why would they do that? You wouldn't believe the money they saved on Health and Life insurance at that time. BTW that included any family member who you had on your insurance policy, if they smoked, they could not be included on your policy!

 

They offered any kind of help to get you to quit that you wanted for a year at no charge to you and anyone hired after the start of the policy would not be hire if they smoked.

 

Funny not one single person quit.

I bet they didn't quit smoking either, at home that is.

 

Sorry, charge them more for their insurance, but no one has a right to tell you you can't smoke.

OK, but sooner or later, something will hit you where you live. That's when people usually get bothered by things like this, when it affects them. Then it's usually too late.

 

 

In my employment, I am under a strict code of conduct that applies to anything I do outside the workplace. As an employee, I'm considered a "face" of the company, and anything deemed inappropriate, I could be subject to termination.

 

That applies to misdmeanor, felonious crimes...but also applies if I go out, have too many glasses of wine and do nothing more than start singing "It's Raining Men" at the top of my lungs at dinner, and a client of my company recognizes me.

Like businesses setting codes of conduct for their employees?

The airlines one is every bit as ridiculous.

 

A dress code is totally different, they don't tell you how to dress at home.

 

Codes of conduct is acceptable for obvious reasons. Smoking is NOT against the law, this is absurd to me. Smoking at home or off the job is your own business.

I'm pretty sure I was against the airline on that one. If I wasn't, I must have been drinking really, really hard that day.

I assume its a private hospital, and if it is, I'm an employee-at-will guy. I'm not sure why the policy was even announced, just fire people who smoke, there or at home. You can fire people for any reason you want except for age, sex, color, national origin, disability, or a few other reasons, so if they want to fire them for being freckled, red-headed, left-handed, small-chested, have warts, or smoke cigarettes, you've got the legal right to do so. And they can quit at any time without notice, too. This is an employment issue, not a rights issue.

 

Now, if you're asking whether its a good business decision, I dunno. Simple sign that says "Smokers need not apply" would seem to have sufficed.

This is what I found.

That's a ridiculous way to do business and one I hope bites then in the rear. I've been on an airplane with some really hefty people sitting next to me, 4 or 5 hour flights at that, somehow I survived. Sorry, but this is just another example of how the whiners in this country are getting too much attention paid to them. People need to learn to man up.

My guess is the cops being sent to your house would be the reason for dismissal.
