How Important is this Recruiting Class for UK?

Featured Replies

With it starting to look like UK might lose 4 freshmen to the NBA in addition to Patterson and the seniors, is this year's recruiting class even more important than last year's for UK? Is this going to be a recurring cycle every year as Cal brings in the one and doners?

I think it'll become more likely that every year there is at least 1 one and done guys, along with some 2,3, and 4 year guys.

Next year's class looks to be a perfect example of that:

Knight - 1 & done

Leslie - 2 year guy

Kanter - 1-2 years

Poole - 4 year guy

I think the right mix of early entry guys and 4 year guys is what will make this team always in the elite of the country under Coach Cal.

I get the feeling that once Cal gets hold of an athlete like Leslie he'll be a one and done by the end of the year. JMO though... No real rhyme or reason for it either.

I don't think it that important. UK makes the Final Four he gets a pass for next season. But it makes the 2011 class real important.

I think next season UK is obviously going to take a step back. I just hope it's not a UNC like season.

2011 is going to be sick though. Cal will have a loaded and experienced roster with some of the top young talent in the country.

If Orton and Bledsoe were to stay to go along with Knight (hopefully) and Kanter and other recruits as well as Miller, Dodson, and Liggins, I think we could be right back at the top.

This class is important to get a mixture of players who can help the team right away such as Knight. Fill some needs especially in the Post. Get some guys that will stick around for experience but can still play such as a Stacey Poole.

When you're bringing in talent like Cal is capable of, and they go pro after one season, EVERY recruiting class is important.

With that said, some of the 2-3 year guys may be more important than the one & done.

I think next year's team will also be very, very good. Kanter is one & done. Miller, Liggins, Dodson and hopefully Orton and/or Bledsoe. We'll have lots of talent again.

Next year's class will be important, but how important will depend on Bledsoe & Orton. If they both stay and we land Knight then the class will be fine. If they both go and we only land Knight then the class would struggle. I think depending on how those 2 players shake out will make all the diffrence in the class.

So will we no longer see groups like the ones with Feldhaus, Farmer, Wood, and Phelfry?

Not at UK, those guys were recruited out of necessity because of the sanctions no everyone wants "athletes".......................

Northern Iowa is that type of team though, Iowa boys.........

Exactly. Plus, the game has changed so much that if you want to be a legit title contender, you need NBA stars that are both talented and athletic.

That said, depending on how the other teams look in 2011, Kentucky could be the most dominant team that year - 40-0 possibilities.

Had we seen one since anyways?

Please don't underestimate how good John Wall, Cousins and Patterson are. Bledsoe, Orton, Miller, Dodson, Liggins, Kanter, Knight, Leslie would be a good team but I wouldn't expect them to have a record like this or be a favorite to win the championship.

Agreed... This team is the exception, rather than the rule. Getting this much star power to be as unselfish as they are and willing to do whatever it takes to get the win is extremely rare. It'll be hard to catch this lightning in a bottle again.
