Fred Hoskins helps out with basketball and football at Bell Co. He does a great job with the kids. He pretty much coaches year around.

I'm not sold yet on Downs. He has had a ton of talent coming through the pipeline at Boone. I would like to see how he would do with a team with less talent than what he has had in his career at Boone. IMO a great coach is one that can take a team without a lot of talent and get them to a higher level and achieve success.

 

Good point with one comment. Almost all of that "talent" at Boone County played for Downs in the Wolfpack AAU organization, so perhaps they are that "talented" because of the coaching he provided before they ever got to Boone County.

Scott Hundley. He is a great JV coach for Montgomery and has experience from the highest level. Will make a great head coach somewhere.

Chris Wilhoite and Tim Glenn from Scott County. Glenn runs a good JV program and Wilhoite is the calm behind the madness of coach Hicks.

I also think that Nick Napier at Scott Co does a good job also.

Nick Napier at Scott County and Brad Sizemore at South Laurel are two younger assistants that come to mind.

Bill Bellicheck isn't well-liked and he's a heck of a coach. It's what you do in the big games that makes you a good coach — you know when Region titles and state championships. Things in that nature. Winning goes a long way.:idunno::notworthy::ohbrother::ylsuper:

Are you trying to say the assistant in question makes illegal tapes of opponent's practices and signals? :notworthy:

Agreed-Boone won in basketball and baseball last year at the JV level, but not where it matters most, at varsity.

 

Back to the question of the thread, I believe some great assistant coaches in Northern Kentucky are Meyer at NCC, Tieman at CovCath-he was the previous head coach. Dick Maile, who is at Beechwood now, but has had many stops along his career, and John Wimzie at Holmes.

 

So you're saying Boone playing in the Regional Championship game and loosing to the Stae Champion Team Holmes by less than 5 was not winning where it counts? Downs is a well respected and great basketball coach that has the ability to get the most out of his players. Like him or not as a person, but to say you question his coaching ability is a joke. Travel to any AAU Ky state tournament and I believe he will be well known for the winning teams he has brought to many tournaments in the past, and that's with a combination of talent and good coaching.

The success of Coach Downs AAU program sells him enough to anyone that knows basketball.
