Letter concerning the separation of Public and Private Schools

I believe you win the award for BGP post that is the most incorrect post ever.

Careful now, this is saying a LOT. :D

Public school districts have the option of opening their schools to students from any location and charging them tuition. Most choose not to. Why? There is only one explanation that I can see. Most of them don't think that anyone will want to pay tuition to attend a public school. They should ask themselves why.

Most public schools realize that if they do that it will spread the gap between the have and have nots. The poorer school districts would lose much while the more affluent school districts will prosper. This would lead to school closings, and the cycle starts again.

WOW! And I promised myself I would not get in this debate anymore but you made me break that promise. :madman:

Public schools do not allow students in because it is not their design to educate students OUTSIDE of their boundaries. It is NOT Augusta's responsibility to educate students from Maysville. It is NOT Harrison County's responsibility to educate students from Scott County. It is unbelievable that you want to attack a government agency for trying to do what they are designed to do and that is to educate students FROM their area.

BTW, latest testing results showed that the students of similar socio-economic background at public and private schools score the same. So private schools, while they LOVE to shout it loud that they are superior educationally, are not.

Even though you won't read this, I'll respond anyway. It is a fact that public schools can open their system to students from outside their district. It is a fact that in most of the districts that do open their borders, the number of applicants is low. Why the number is low is a matter for opinion. Why the number of districts that are open to out of district students is also a matter of opinion.

I have a perfect solution to this private/public debate. Once athletes graduate from the 8th grade have all athletic directors and coaches from all HS teams get together on a set date. On this set date all the AD's and coaches would have a discussion on these athletes and where they should go. We all know that HS's have scouts that watch these boys and girls play different sports. So on this set date, and based on the HS's teams previous performance, pick these kids to play. The athletes would have to go there since the KHSAA voted in a "draft" rule. Problem solved.

Sound ridiculous? Sure it does. These are kids we are talking about. And this is where sports has taken our education system. Education is second when comes to athletics. As long as the kid can score 30 points a game or score 4 touchdowns a game, education doesn't matter. JMO.

The online version of running away with my fingers in my ears.

I hope they seperate now....this is a joke!

I'm with you Tony. We should form our own division called "PHSAA" Private High School Athletic Association, and Lex Cath can run it. KHSAA can kiss our private money away. What are we waiting on?

What is the true purpose of this resolution? Fairness, Equality and the chance for everyone to win. These are unattainable goals for any organization to strive for. Dividing public/private schools will not fix a fairness issue it just changes the top group of schools from one to another. High school sports will be cheapened on both sides if this passes. Ask the kids if they feel winning a state championship without beating everyone has the same meaning as being a true state champion. What is fair about open enrollment in jefferson County to the other counties across KY? Recruiting is not done only at Private Schools it is done at many schools in this state public more than private. If you want to make rules (20 mile radius,No financial aid,no middle school programs,no out of state players) enforce them. What is fair to the small private school football player that has to play STX or Trinity? This issue is about parents and administrators not students. The movie "Hoosiers" would not have taken place if Indinana basketball was in classes. The Indiana state basketball tournament is no longer looked at as a great tournament . Championships are won on the field not Board rooms, let the atheletes decide who gets to wear the ring and remember you can't make life fair, its not!

Actually now that you mentioned it...we already have a name for the new division...

Well then, what are we waiting on. We don't need a vote. By the way, what does the "R" stand for?

There is a rule that many businesses use called the 80-20 rule. It means that 80% of time a certain rule or policy will apply as written, and the other 20% of the times you will have to deal with an exception. Apply that to KHSAA state champions and it does not even apply.

There are so few private schools that dominate a sport in the KHSAA. And for every one that does, there is a public school that dominates as well. If you needed a rule like the 80-20 rule for the KHSAA it would probably be the 95-5 rule. Is that worth creating new policy?

Proponents of the division would have you believe this is about equity and fairness, or parity. The KHSAA is so far from parity it's ridiculous, and the publics are even further from it than the privates. And lack of parity is the case in nearly every state in the union. And that is also the case in real life.

Another real problem with this proposal is the unexpected consequence. There are so few private shcools in the KHSAA on a sport by sport basis, that in some sports their private state title would be as meaningless as the wood base the trophy sets on. What are wrestlers at private schools supposed to compete for? Or football players? By my count there are 7 private schools with wrestling programs, including Ky School for Blind (not sure public or private). And 16 football playing schools across 4 classes.

If the problem is how many players you have or where they come from, then why not start with multiple classes of basketball sweet 16's? If you eliminate private schools from state playoffs, you will create a new group of dominant public schools. Then what?

Here's a plan. Once your school has won a state title in any sport, you are eliminated from future years' playoffs in that sport, until every team in the state has won a title. Then all will be allowed back in the pool. What could be more fair than guarenteeing every school a state title in every sport every century or so?

Are you kidding? We already have DISTRICTS worked out... I just wish we'd been up and running this season.
