Is Steve Nash The Greatest?

Featured Replies

The greatest PG? That would be Oscar Robertson.

Nice. :thumb: I'd always take the Big O at #1 as well.

You're right. I said all-time, but really meant the best PG of the modern basketball era.

FWIW, I'm not advocating for Nash. I think it's an intriguing argument and something that I hadn't really thought of until the last 2 weeks or so. One of the NBA analysts said that Magic is #1, and Nash is probably #2. I thought it was an interesting comment.

Are you serious; did Nash even get there? Kidd took the Nets to the Finals in back to back years- this isn't even a discussion I'm interested in having. ANYONE that claims Nash had had a better post-season career than Kidd or even tries to insiuate that those guys are close when it comes to the post-season knows NOTHING about basketball.

But does the lack of postseason success preclude someone from being the greatest in their sport?

Surely not.

If you're comparing Nash's greatness to Kidd's based on the number of titles each has won, it's a pretty pointless argument, don't you think? That's all I"m saying.

I hope not, is John Salley really better than Charles or Karl?

One thing I've noticed about JKidd is that with age he's actually matured as a shooter.

How can someone be the greatest and have never won a championship?

If you want to argue for the specific skill, like shooting, maybe I can see it. But, to say that Nash is a greater PG than guys that have played at his level and led their teams to championships or guys that have played at his level and won more consistently is not a strong arguement (especially considering his position) IMO.

Did John Salley play at Barkley's or Malone's level? No one looks at championships in a vacuum, however winning is the ultimate goal and if a player plays at the same level as another and wins more consistently in the post season then how can you ignore that?

The only other modern day players mentioned in this thread are Jason Kidd & Magic Johnson. Neither Kidd nor Nash have won any championships.

If you want a list of guys that are better in my mind in the modern era, I would say that Isaiah was better. I would say that Stockton was better. Jerry West was better. I would even see guys like Walt Frazier and Gary Payton being in the discussion. All time, Oscar was better. I could see the arguement for Cousy and Tiny as well.

FWIW, a PG is the on the floor leader and to say that Kidd leading his team to back to back finals some how doesn't count or doesn't matter when compared to Nash because he didn't win them is silly, IMO. Nash has never led his team past the conference title game. Every other point guard I metioned either won or at least got to the finals (not sure about Tiny, but you want to look at those numbers and compare?). That has to mean something. I think it means a lot more than others, apparently.

Sure is a nice case for Nash being the greatest shooter of all time. PG he would be in the mix, depending on how you define modern era. I'd take Magic ahead of him and flip a coin for Kidd.

As said before, all time it's a one man show to me. Oscar.

No, no and no. He is awesome but far from the greatest. IMO

What about Jerry West as the greatest shooter of all time?

Fair enough. Like I said, I'm not advocating for Nash. I just think it's an interesting argument, and he certainly has the numbers to at least enter the discussion.

Who, in your opinion, is better? Surely if it's as cut & dry as "no, no, and no" and "far from the greatest", you must have a few players in mind.

An argument could certainly be made for Jerry West.

As I stated earlier, I failed to mention that "all time" is not really "all time" but "all time in modern history."

West retired in the early to mid 70's, so he would not fall in this category.

Magic, Oscar, Cousy, Kidd are the 1st ones that come to mind. And I'm actually a Nash fan.
