2010 Spring Football

Featured Replies

I'm not a fan of spring practice. I don't think it gives the benefit that others do. I fully realize I'm in the minority on this but there's no way you can tell me that HHS doesn't win the championship this past year if they didn't have spring practice.

At some schools its raised to such an important must-do that players either do not participate in other spring sports or they skip out on practice of their spring sport for fear of "getting behind." A football coach should not let a kid playing another sport participate. Period.

You do have to admire my consistency on this issue.

I realize I'm swimming upstream.

However, why shouldn't the head football coach tell spring sports players that its wrong to abandon their teammates and coaches IN SEASON for a sport that will not have their first game for 5 1/2 months?

I'm not against spring football even though I don't think it has an impact on W/L. I'm against spring sports participants skipping their spring sport for spring football. I don't see anyone on this board (or at least this thread) being OK with football players skipping a few practices if there were a "fall baseball" practice. It wreaks of a double standard.

A few thoughts:

I believe you are overestimating the amount of coordination going on between coaches. That or we have a different definition of "coordination."

Where is the baseball team supposed to practice when football gets first dibs on the practice field and the baseball team gets knocked off of the football field for 3 weekends before the season starts by rec soccer?

Soccer would get first dibs over everybody since it's a city owned and ran field

Why can't the baseball and football split the field like other schools do during spring practice?

Last I checked they do split times

You're totally discounting the game of baseball and the amount of intricate detail that goes into it. If it were as simple as going to the batting cage and throwing on your own why even have practice? Do you think that kids and their parents know how to develop an arm? Do you think they know where all 9 positions go when its 1st and 3rd and a gapper? Is "the wheel" known by every baseball player? These things are practiced every day because they have to be instinctual when they happen in a 3-2 ball game.

Lastly, the concept behind spring football is that ten additional practices is of great benefit for 5 months down the road so why wouldn't it make sense that those ten days (or 4 as you say) wouldn't benefit both the player and the team for a season that starts this month?

It's almost you are responding through somebody else. These comments sound very familiar. All good comments mind you.

In Ft. Thomas, it's my opinion that spring break plays a huge part in whether a kid plays baseball or not. I know the past coaching staff didn't allow it, but the new regime is smarter to realize you are fighting a loosing battle with the spring break issue. Spring Break is a rite of passage in FT.

Really though it's like :deadhorse:

Let me clarify.

Baseball should be able to use the turf field during baseball. Football should be able to use it during spring practice. Some schools with turf have them on the field at the same time with no problems. That doesn't seem to be an option in Ft Thomas.

Secondly, when you say its a "city owned field" are you saying that the high school baseball team should not be able to use it before a rec league soccer team?

And when you say "over everybody" would that rec soccer team get it before the football team?

Let me clarify.

Some schools do share the field at the same time. Beechwood and CovCath quickly come to mind. Beechwood has a lot fewer players and doesn't two platoon. Easy for them to work on one half and baseball on the other half. Highlands has 60 plus players out for spring football and two platoons. Impossible to get done what they want to get done on half the field. Big difference with Beechwood. As to CovCath....well perhaps CovCath's football should be using the entire field in the Spring.

By the way, the football field at Highlands is not a City owned or controlled field folks. Don't know where that false rumor got started, but it's not.

There were some innocent miscommunications and mistakes made this year. The person scheduling the field (not Mueller by the way) thought that the City had some priorities when in fact it didn't. Nothing sinister happened. A mistake was made.

Baseball gets on the football field every day for 45 minutes to work on fielding before the football team hits the field and then goes to work on hitting and their arms. When there is no spring football they get the field for longer periods. It works fine according to Jeremy. Optimal? No. But optimal couldn't be obtained unless Highlands didn't do spring football, which isn't going to happen unless and until the KHSAA bans spring football.

The baseball program could always raise the money the way the football program did and put turf down on the baseball field so they don't have to worry about spring football. Just a thought. Actually I know that's something Jeremy is working on.

Yeah, the football players have football equipment on. Its not like they are going to get hurt by a baseball if it hits them. Let em practice together, that way the baseball guys like can catch a go route or make a pancake block and then go take a few cuts in the cage all without even having to change. Now, if the baseball guys make the mistake of chasing a fly ball down and trying a Willie Mays over the shoulder catch then he better have a mouth pc in because Cinco might loosen some chitlens. This might really be a cool thing to try. 20n10 FOG.

That's interesting. I heard a similiar rumor a few years ago. Someone was trying to tell me that the coach at Highlands has to fill out a schedule of specific days he wants to use the field throughout the year and report it to the City or whoever. What! I have heard some crazy things but that takes the CAKE. They also made it sound like the City was going to be responsible to replace the field the next time around. That's crazy too. Where would someone dream of such a thing.:idunno:

That would really be a disaster to turf Highland Park. People think City ran events get first dibs now(which I have no clue if they do) at Highlands. Highland park would be a circus. I like it though!!! As long as my daughter plays softball with Ron Dill's daughter, I think our practice times would be no problem.:thumb: So with that....Turf the Field-Turf the Field-Turf the Field!!!

So on this lonely Tuesday evening, I sit here a wonderin if any other teams started Spring Football yet. Now HHS couldn't of been the only team that lost both boys and girls BB on the same night are they? Or maybe it's just that those other schools are giving the proper time between sports to grieve and put the seasons behind them before they move on to other sports, like Spring football.

So anyone?

Works fine? Interesting.

Actually Henry is right. By each July 1, the school submits the dates that it wants to use the field. School gets every date that it wants and puts on the schedule, without exception. If there are any open times, the City can rent it out. The school can add school use dates to the schedule if those dates haven't been rented out by the City. If you think that's crazy then you should have stepped up and pledged $6,500 a year for 10 years to help pay for the turf. Had you or the school done so, the city wouldn't have been involved. Since you and the School didn't and the City did, there is City involvement. Bless them. But it is totally wrong to say it's City owned or controlled.

You are also wrong in that the City is responsible for replacing the field. The money that is generated from the rental of the field is placed in an account. Those funds will be contributed to the replacement costs. The school is responsible for replacing the field. City has no obligation to replace the field.

Documents pertaining to the above are in my office. I drafted them.

What else you got?
