February 23, 201016 yr I haven't cared much for their newer stuff but 'Parachutes' and 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' were fantastic albums. I can completely understand not liking their style of music but to say they are terrible just seems ignorant to me. Contrary to popular belief it is actually possible to hate a band while still recognizing that they're good at what they do.
February 23, 201016 yr Though I am sure to be shunned by Jim and RTS, I declare that I love Coldplay's music. They are actually one of my favorite "new" bands of the last decade. From the moment I first heard "Yellow" 9 or 10 years ago, I've been a big fan. How could anyone listen to tracks like "The Scientist" or "Fix You" and NOT like them? Are we going to be forced into making you turn your card in? I've been meaning to ask, how can you like Journey and not REO? They're kinda similar.

Contrary to popular belief it is actually possible to hate a band while still recognizing that they're good at what they do. I don't think anybody said they weren't technically competent. They just misapply that competence by playing bland, uninspiring "music." They're about a half-step better than what goes on in the Christian Rock arena.
February 23, 201016 yr My dislike of Coldplay is based on a small handful of reasons: 1) They are being praised for playing music that sounds like the U2 music of twenty years ago. Additionally, I think U2 is a "one trick pony" and should have hung it up years ago, so for a band to get so many accolades for doing something that's already been overdone is annoying to me. 2) Coldplay, and in particular Chris Martin, have/has a very high opinion of themselves/himself. I don't like that - from anyone. 3) In general, I am frustrated by any artist who's work is touted as "earth-shattering", or furthermore, any albums that are dubbed "chart-topping" before they are even officially released. 4) I don't like their music. It's poppy drivel for people who like to think they have an appreciation for "alternative" music. If you want British "alternative" music, go buy an album by Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, or even Travis. Regardless, since I mentioned U2 and egos in this same post, I'm reminded of one of my favorite jokes. What is the difference between God and Bono? God does not wander around Dublin pretending to be Bono.

Additionally, I think U2 is a "one trick pony" and should have hung it up years ago, so for a band to get so many accolades for doing something that's already been overdone is annoying to me. So you dislike them because there are some who think they sound like Old U2. Not because they do, and not because they are trying to be, but because some people believe that. 2) Coldplay, and in particular Chris Martin, have/has a very high opinion of themselves/himself. I don't like that - from anyone. I'd love to see the evidence. Every interview I've seen shows pretty humble, media shy guys. But, I'm open to the contrary evidence. Doesn't mean I won't like their music, because I will. 3) In general, I am frustrated by any artist who's work is touted as "earth-shattering", or furthermore, any albums that are dubbed "chart-topping" before they are even officially released. In other words, again, you aren't basing your opinion on the body of the work, but on the positivity generated prior to official release of the work. 4) I don't like their music. It's poppy drivel for people who like to think they have an appreciation for "alternative" music. If you want British "alternative" music, go buy an album by Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, or even Travis. Radiohead's OK, as is MBV. I like them too. I don't think anyone thinks Coldplay is alternative. I certainly don't. It's not like pop music can't be good too. Look, I'm fine if you don't like Coldplay, U2 or whomever. (Probably an REM hater too, aren't you? ) But, does that mean the artists are not good? And I personally don't understand the validity of the reasons you listed for not liking Coldplay. On the otherhand, I'm pretty sure most don't understand the physical nausea I use to determine my least favorites as well. Regardless, since I mentioned U2 and egos in this same post, I'm reminded of one of my favorite jokes. February 23, 201016 yr Sorry, that was meant for rockmom. I don't really find them that similar. But, again, no one's accused me of being a musical genius. All I can tell you is that Journey doesn't evoke the same phyical response as REO. Not sure why, but I'm not looking to be a music critic, just looking for music that I like.
February 23, 201016 yr I don't think anybody said they weren't technically competent. They just misapply that competence by playing bland, uninspiring "music." They're about a half-step better than what goes on in the Christian Rock arena. They're more then just 'technically competent' and I'm sure I feel the same way about the Christian Rock genre in general as you do so we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.
February 23, 201016 yr So you dislike them because there are some who think they sound like Old U2. Not because they do, and not because they are trying to be, but because some people believe that. On the otherhand, I'm pretty sure most don't understand the physical nausea I use to determine my least favorites as well. Yes, I dislike Coldplay partially because I think they sound like old U2. If I want to listen to old U2, I'll listen to old U2. Also (I realize that it may likely sound somewhat unsubstantiated as I can't give you any wheres or whens regarding the interviews) I did see a couple of interviews with the band - particularly about their charity work - and they couldn't stop talking about how great all of the things were that they did for the world and charities in general. To that I say, "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Additionally, check out their music videos and tell me they aren't all about Chris Martin trying to show off how "dreamy" he is...:puke: As far as judging by the "positivity generated prior to official release" goes, I would chalk that positivity up to some serious hawking and prostituting on the part of Capitol Records. I much prefer music that sells itself rather than music that pays executives to sell it. :madman: I might also mention that officially, for the record, I am not a REM hater. I have 4 or 5 of their albums...so we share that common ground, as well as a common tendency towards nausea around crappy music.
February 23, 201016 yr Are we going to be forced into making you turn your card in? I won't give up my card til it's pried from my cold dead hands (or whatever that saying is).

February 23, 201016 yr Contrary to popular belief it is actually possible to hate a band while still recognizing that they're good at what they do. I agree and :puke:Leonard Skynard:puke: would be that band for me.

Maybe it's just the lead singer that repulses you so, sometimes that can do it for me.
