January 2, 20197 yr Received a Goose Island Bourbon County Stout (2018) in a gift exchange this year. How long should I wait before I crack it open? 1 year? 2? Longer? It says on the label that it develops in the bottle for up to 5 years. I had a couple of bottles last year and I drank one within a month and it was good immediately. I also had a couple bottles of the reserve last year and I drank one this past Thanksgiving. Last year my cousin gave me a few bottles of the 2014 BCBS. I drank one at that time and it was still good, but a couple of weeks ago I went to drink the last one and found that the beer seemed flat like it lacked any carbonation. I think that if I were you I'd try to drink them within two years just to be safe. To me aged them in the bottle really didn't have any noticeable effect.
January 8, 20197 yr Wife and I went up to Sonder Brewing in Mason, OH for the first time on Saturday and was impressed. Really nice space and they had quite a few beers that I really enjoyed. They had a great Mango Milkshake IPA and another NE IPA that I'd put on par with Listermann. Pretty good for only being two months old. They had a Brew River Gastropub inside of it and the food looked pretty good. We just got pretzels with beer cheese, but it might have been the best beer cheese I've ever had.
January 8, 20197 yr Since we were up that way, we also stopped at March First Brewing. I don't think I'll be back. Very unimpressed with their tab room. Beers are mediocre at best. Looked like they had a nice event space though.
January 9, 20197 yr Braxton announced they're adding a 5,000 sq foot rooftop bar as well as expanding production to 30,000 barrels. This will allow them to distribute to all of Tennessee and Ohio in addition to Kentucky. The expansion will run roughly $5MM. Awesome news, as I really like Braxton, but it does make me wonder....With the massiveness of Rhinegeist, MadTree, and now Braxton, is it possible there are too many "giant" craft breweries in a very small radius? Couple that with all the smaller local breweries and it makes me wonder if they've started to outgrow the area/market?

I would imagine a small brewery like Alexandria or Darkness can always remain successful as long as they stay in their lane and remain a small neighborhood brewery. Or take places like Listermann, Urban Artifact, and Streestide that have carved out a little bit of a niche for themselves. I don't think we'll see too many more pop up at this point, but the ones that are here currently will remain successful, for the most part, if they stay focused on who they are.

They fired their head brewer a while back, without any real notice and/or reason (could be more to the story) and kept all of his recipes since they were developed while he worked for Woodburn, which makes sense. Apparently he showed up for work and the locks had been changed. Well all of that ruffled a lot of feathers in the Cincinnati beer community and there are a lot of people that refuse to go there because of it. He has thus found a job with another brewery (maybe 50 West). Since then the quality of their product has somewhat gone down hill. I believe that they aren't seeing anywhere near as many patrons as they previously received. Was even told that they were delinquent on paying their taxes, which I believe because a few months ago they had to close for a couple of days. I just don't believe that things are going well. Everything above I believe to be true. What I'm not sure about is that I've also heard that Woodburn has quietly looked for someone to buy it and another brewery put in a low ball offer, which would have allowed them to open an additional location. I just got a feeling it might not be around anymore from all the smoke that is swirling around it. The one or two times we stopped in since the brewer was fired, it's been very dead. They might truly not be in danger, just feels like it may be on the horizon.

January 27, 20197 yr I tried the Nitro "Wake up Dead" beer last night. It's a Russian Stout. Kinda like a milkshake but at 10.2 abv it was a kicker!
