February 9, 201016 yr Never heard that one. It was about the dollars. UK always wanted to play in Freedom Hall for their end of the series prior to Rupp but once Rupp was open they mostly played in Lex. Knight is not afraid but Vaught makes an interesting point I still think is true. Knight is a bully who always leaves when he stops getting his way. For proof see: IU's dismissal after they would no longer tolerate him, Texas Tech as he wore out his welcome there, Jeremy Schapp's interview, and IMO; ESPN someday. :thumb: Its just something I had heard several times, no idea where it came from. I can't seem to find any stories about it. I did find the list of all the games though. I had always had in my head that Knight was a big reason for going to neutral sites starting in 1991. Yearly series started in 1969. The first two games (pre Knight) split between Bloomington and Lexington. Knight started in 1971 and from 71 to 75 the games alternated between Bloomington and Louisville. Rupp opened in 1976 and from 76 to 85 the games alternated between Bloomington and Lexington. From 1986 to 1990 there were two games in Bloomington, two games in Indianapolis, and only 1 game in Lexington. From 1991 to 2005 the games alternated between Indianapolis and Louisville (Knight's last year was 1999/2000). In 2006 the series moved back to Bloomington/Lexington. Here's the breakdown from the Bob Knight era: Bloomington - 9 Indianapolis - 7 Louisville - 7 Lexington - 6
February 9, 201016 yr For those saying Bob isn't afraid to come to Rupp.... isn't he the reason the UK/IU games were being played at neutral sites? Because he didn't want to come to Rupp? A lot of that had to do with the fact that he felt like he always got screwed by the officials in Rupp. "A Season On The Brink" touches on this.
February 9, 201016 yr And Jim, I don't know Larry Vaught but I'm sure he isn't worried about an old man who just runs his mouth. Some journalist have a pair. Well, history shows us that Bob Knight sometimes does more than "just run his mouth." And Bob is about six inches taller and about a hundred pounds heavier than Larry, so if you're looking for the tale of the tape in a hypothetical matchup, Knight wins. But like I said, with the attention Larry pays to college hoops on a large scale, Larry and Bob have had plenty of meetings over the years and are probably friendly, and may even be friends, so I think you're looking for more than what's there in your whole silly little "us against them" scenario.
February 9, 201016 yr Author A lot of that had to do with the fact that he felt like he always got screwed by the officials in Rupp. "A Season On The Brink" touches on this. So "Fearless Bob" who made a career out of intimidating officials was afraid he would get cheated? Are you serious? Wonder if anyone ever felt they felt they might get screwed in Bloomington? You know the place where The General would throw a chair or at least a tantrum if things didn't go his way. I will say "A Season On The Brink" is a credible, unbiased source.

Well, considering Feinstein was given unlimited and unfettered access to IU hoops during this time, it's about as credible and unbiased as it gets. Especially so since it doesn't really reflect well upon Knight/IU. It's obvious you haven't read it.

So if Bob Knight said it, its true? Anyway care to address why if he is so fearless then why was he afraid of the refs at Rupp. Sounds paranoid to me.

Please enlighten me on what Bob Knight has done besides slam a telephone, make faces in a press conference, choke a player, through a chair, verbally assult a Puerto Rican, or cheap shot Joe Hall that makes him so tough. He is a 70 year old man and some of you are acting like he just whipped Rampage Jackson for the UFC title. Anyway if he wanted to be there Saturday he could be but he has choosen to hide behind ESPN. This is his latest act of bravery. And Jim its not my scenario. Larry Vaught wrote the article you seem to know him take it up with him.

Anyway care to address why if he is so fearless then why was he afraid of the refs at Rupp. Sounds paranoid to me. The "truth" is totally irrelevant! The book was about Bob Knight and IU -- the book was only concerned with presenting his view of it! :ohbrother:

February 9, 201016 yr Author The "truth" is totally irrelevant! The book was about Bob Knight and IU -- the book was only concerned with presenting his view of it! :ohbrother: So his view is that he thought his team would get screwed by the refs at Rupp? So the refs wouldn't screw him in Freedom Hall or the Hoosier Dome. Sound a tad bit paranoid to me. Plus going on the road in college basketball is part of the game. Unless of course your Bob Knight and then you just stomp your feet and hold your breath until you get your way.

February 9, 201016 yr Gameday crew: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/cgd/index?week=5 Was that "The General" in that picture? :idunno:
February 9, 201016 yr A lot of that had to do with the fact that he felt like he always got screwed by the officials in Rupp. "A Season On The Brink" touches on this. Knight always felt he got "screwed" by the refs when he lost. (Kind of like UK fans. ) Knight always felt UK got away with everything from recruiting to home court advantage. (Note, I'm not denying either isn't propped up by good evidence) But the reason it stopped being Lexington/Bloomington was the "Big Four Classic" and then the need to sell more tickets with the Hoosier Dome visits after those years. I could be wrong but I don't think Knight ever beat UK in Rupp Arena. That alone will get you paranoid of a place. (Kind of like Joe Hall was of Stokely Center in Knoxville for those of us old enough to remember. :thumb:) Bottom Line: Knight could care less if he had to go to work at Lex or not. He would eat up the hate. ESPN though doesn't want that kind of exposure IMO. For that matter it's a wonder Digger ever comes to UK with his record and dislike of the Cats "back in the day." :thumb:
