California School for the Deaf 49 Kentucky School for the Deaf 6

Featured Replies

Kentucky School for the Deaf falls to 0-10 as California School for the Deaf travels to Ky for the win.

Wow! Seems like a long way for a HS team to travel for one game...is a) CSD a really, really wealthy school, or b) making a long trip with multiple games against multiple teams, or c) get really lost and wind up in KY?

I am sure coming from CA and having a special school such as this, I bet it is in the state budget!

I think they are from California, Ohio. Northeast of Cincinnati.

When I first saw the thread, I couldn't figure out what the letters meant. Then I read the posts and it dawned on me. We spend so much time worrying about coaches, D1 players, recruiting, etc. that we forget that for some kids, those ideas aren't even part of their thinking when it comes to basketball. They just play because they love the game and for no other reason and they play just as hard as anyone else. I would suggest to everyone, especially parents of kids who are fighting for championships and scholarships, count yourself fortunate for what chances your kids have. I'm not trying to preach, but sometimes I think we all need a reality check.

I have heard traveling a long ways for a win, but from California to Kentucky- ---- that may be stretching it.

They played again today and the final was....

CSD 61

KSD 13

That is the exact reason we ask the members to spell out the school name.

Waitaminute ... you're telling me that thread titles such as "Eagles thump County" and "East up 22 at half" aren't descriptive enough? Who could possibly be confused by that? Jeez. :sssh:

Sorry about that...

To clear up any confusion the California team is from Riverside, outside of Los Angeles. The boys team (who also came to Danville) is head coached by David Hamilton, perhaps the greatest player in Kentucky School f/t Deaf history. This was a celebration weekend of KSD's greatest players and he was invited back, along with both the boys and girls teams, for the ceremony. Teaching and coaching in California would have made it nearly impossible for him to return to Danville without there being a reason to bring the whole team.

For those who don't know, Hamilton was Advocate-Messenger (Danville) area player of the year in 1981 and was perhaps the regional player of the year as well. That 1981 team was the only team in KSD history to advance to the regional tournament. If you aren't familiar with the school, KSD always struggles to get enough kids to really compete in the 12th region. Hamilton's team defeated Garrard County in the district before falling to Danville. They ended up losing a close matchup in the first round of the region to Wayne County; but the regional is most remembered by the eight minute ovation the KSD team received following the introduction of starters from a packed house at Pulaski County High School.

This info doesn't shed much light on the girls game, but hopefully you guys all understand why the California team was in the area and why it was likely one of the more memorable weekends in school history.
