paNDA - Emotions run high on this thread........be careful.

 

And I'm one who, with a personal tie to this rivalry, as do some others in this thread, can have my emotions run high. If I offend anyone I apologize because I truly don't want to be confrontational and angry. Just can't keep from letting some things go at times!

 

Let me add to paNDA's comments that, prior to the Ryle team leaving, Jenna Crittendon and Sydney Moss met and they exchanged "Good games!" After battling tooth and nail they were able to be congratulatory, civil, and cordial with each other once the battle was over.

 

Nice show of class to go along with the athletic ability these two young ladies display. We may not all agree on which of the two is better or has the highest potential, but I think we can agree that they closed this particular chapter out better than have us "adults" (adults = just big kids!)

I don't think there is a limit on when an offer can be made by a college.

 

Sophomore year the college is only permitted one correspondence to the recruit which is usually a letter and questionaire. Coaches can talk to the recruit anytime they are on the college campus and the recruit can call the coach anytime.

 

Junior year the college can communicate via mail and e-mail as much as they want. The same rules apply for on campus and phone calling. In April, May and June of the junior year, colleges are permitted to call the recruit once a month.

 

They can offer anytime. Most will not offer until the head coach has seen the athlete play. Some will not offer until the recruit comes and visits on campus. We have had some make us offers over the phone or via e-mail to demonstrate their interest.

 

The recruit can make a verbal committment anytime, but the earliest they can sign is November of their senior year.

 

It is very difficult to determine the exact level of interest from the letters that players receive their sophomore year. You can literally get 100's of letters. Some schools start with letters much sooner than the sophomore year as they see kids at AAU tournamnets at an earlier age. Also, the one letter rule is "stretched" a bit by some schools. Seems their interpretation of the one correspondence by letter is that the same "type" letter can be sent again and again! I suspect you've seen that as well!

 

Also, lots of communication is carried on between the recruiter and the high school and/or AAU coach of the player. We've seen that recently with a coach of a sophomore player trying to work through the coach to set up an unofficial visit.

 

As you said, sometimes confusing and certainly not as simple as letters received.

Postponed. They were to play Kettering Fairmont. Would have been a good one to watch as Boone's Moss would have gone against Fairmont's Cassie Sant, a 6-2 senior who is committed to Dayton.

Highlands, something like 18 football title. With multiple coaches. Sometimes its just the program.

 

Okay saying any sport was a little broad on my parts sorry about that. I forgot about all the great football programs and coaches. But from a basketball coaching stand point in this area no one has done what she has done!

You are right! Considering Fookes is on a string of 12 consecutive years with a transfer and the last four were with a transfer including these two I would say she has underachieved!! Have alot more respect for the coaches who develop and win with their own players. Really have respect for the programs

who lost players to Boone and won Regional Titles in spite. Conner and Highlands for example. Never know Ryle could be the next!!

Just a funny tidbit to add: when I was in High School in the mid 1970's I was a basketball player. I got a letter through our School's coach's office from Princeton University's football program saying I was recommended as a student athlete. Never did hear from the basketball coaches! LOL!

If you are a coach and see your player get slammed to the floor and see her hit her head hard. Then the opposing player laughs afterwards. What are you suppose to do as a coach? Protect your players! and thats what Coach Fookes did right there! The ryle player should have been ejected from the game no question. That should not be tolarated in any type of basketball game, theses girls could get hurt out here!

 

That shouldn't be condoned, I agree. But I saw #23 on Ryle get hit in the forehead by a Boone player running past a pick and it snapped her head back. The ref, who usually only does freshman and jv games looked right at it and called nothing. I don't hear any complaints about that dirty play. Apparently I wasn't the only one to see it from the crowd's reaction but it wasn't called so I guess that's okay. I guess it's a one way street.

Let's not forget that the Boone program was already a power when Nell got there. I believe, but I may be wrong, wasn't Benny Coffman the coach in the early 80's and they won some region titles. Let's make sure Benny gets a little love for starting the ball rolling.

Just remember when you look at this list that none of them would be on the list without talented players. There are so many good coaches who never get a chance at a list like this because they simply don't have the players. I know that some coaches can make less talent better, but be realistic, you don't win championships without talent. Look at some of the powerful girls' and boys' teams from the past and you know any number of coaches could have won with them. You have to have talent. I heard a saying once that no jockey has ever won the derby without a horse. So keep the little guys in mind. They work just as hard with less.
