If by "all of these" you mean the Ryle/HHS, Bellevue/Dayton, or Conner/Boone they were scheduled.

Regardless of who wins the games this season, I think Dale will see if he can find another quality program to play so as not to have to play Ryle twice. However if Ryle is interested in playing twice and Ryle is the "best available", then Dale will schedule Ryle twice.

 

Mu understanding is that they will not be playing twice in 2011, as Ryle is now playing the Colerain game. I'm not certain they were ever scheduled to play the 2-game series beyond 2010.

You are right about it not ever being scheduled beyond 2010. I'm sorry if my post created the implication that it was.

I'm not sure about the others but I remember Bellevue would play Dayton the first and last game of the season.

I would not do this if at all possible.

Keep in mind that not all Ohio schools are interested in playing Highlands due to the Harbin point system. A loss to Highlands by a Ky school is just that: a loss. A loss to Highlands by an Oh school may keep them out of the playoffs. Harbin considerations are a big, big deal to the Ohio schools and opponents are chosen much, much more carefully in Ohio. You probably won't see Colerain schedule Cincy X and Elder again in the regular season for a long time due to those two losses keeping Colerain out of the playoff as a result of the Harbin system.

 

When the 09-10 schedule was being put in place, I know that Dale talked to several nearby Ohio schools. Some were not interested; some were, but the open weeks did not match up. Hence, he scheduled Ryle twice.

I know at one point, and I am assuming it is still the case, the Harbin rating system took into consideration out of state opponents. If I am a Mason, Lakota, LaSalle type program that has a hard time making the playoffs in Ohio due to not enough points, I would try and schedule (and beat) Highlands and hope that is the only loss they have. Great way to pick up alot of points!

 

As a fan, I would love to see all N Ky teams play at least one comparable team from across the river. Could be the Greater Cincinnati Championship Series. This sounds bigger than the Herbstreit!

It makes no sense to me for football teams play the same team twice in a season unless they meet in playoffs somehow. However, why is it ok for basketball and baseball to play same teams 3,4,5 times and beat all same ones over and over and call it a winning season.

You are correct, in that it CAN be a big deal in Ky, but three way district ties don't happen very often. It happens but fairly rarely. Whereas losses under the Ohio Harbin system affect who makes the playoffs each year and extremely often. Again, I submit Colerain not making the playoffs in 09 as a perfect example of how losses can prevent good Ohio teams from making the playoffs. An Ohio school losing to Highlands could have a playoff impact very frequently, whereas a non-district Ky school losing to Highlands will have a playoff qualifying impact very infrequently. As a result, Ohio coaches are very, very concerned with the teams they schedule; more so than most Ky coaches for reasons that are understandable. A benefit to our system is that coaches can, if they want to, put several non-district "stretch games" on their schedule without worrying about it impacting their ability to qualify for the playoffs.

 

As I believe I stated above, I'd rather play Ryle ( a quality opponent) twice than playing them once and having to go on a long, expensive bus ride to play a much lesser quality opponent (if Highlands even could have found one willing to play us). Which I know for a fact is how Dale looked at it.

Of course you would schedule Highlands if you thought you could beat them. However, if you weren't real certain of that happening, then you wouldn't be as likely to schedule Highlands. A win over Highlands is a huge help in the Harbin rankings. But a loss could be a big problem. Do you honestly think the coaches at Mason, Lakota and LaSalle type programs are real confident that could beat Highlands? My guess is that they are not.

While I would agree that HHS probably does struggle to get NKY teams to play them, I would also have to offer that with the sheer number of HS football teams within 30-45 minute drive of HHS, I would think if you looked hard enough you could find a quality, local opponent that would play you. Think Moeller, LaSalle, East Carter IN, Mason, Lakota(s), etc. You still have a local team that with the right school you could build another rivalry. As a side note, if Ryle comes out with 2 Ws, do you schedule them twice again the following year?

They have played teams from Columbus, OH and Indianapolis, IN to fill out their schedule in the past. They would be a great matchup for Ryle or Conner.

I mentioned East Central playing Highlands a long time ago in a different thread . You are correct , they have great fans and a very good football team and program. It hasn't been too long ago , that they brought home a state championship trophy. (Indiana)
