Hearsay the Heretic: Chapter 1

Featured Replies

If you get a tat make sure that it means something to you. I don't believe God would care one way or another as long as it's tasteful. It may be hard to witness to others if you had a Mike Tyson like tat on your face. But if done in a tasteful place I see no harm in it.

My buddy and fellow BGP member Big Spikes has tattoos in memory of his father and grandfather, I would dare anyone to say that is "sinful".

So go get it if you know that you don't care that you have it forever. :thumb:

There are exceptions however.

Word of caution. If you google "lower back tattoos" it takes a little while to find an acceptable image to post on BGP.:D

"Might as well be a bulls-eye."- Wedding Crashers.

If you have a question, it seems wise to not do it.

One of my favorite Scriptures,

1 Cor 10:23

Everything is permissable but not everything is beneficial.

Mrs. Hearsay and I were considering getting small tattoos. I was going to get one of a glass with liquid filled up halfway on my shoulder. Silly little thing that my wife and I can do together, nothing more nothing less.

A church member tells me that God forbids tattoos and that if I did so I was sinning and violating scripture. He cited me to Leviticus 19:26. Sure enough, there it is.

Of course then I read all of Leviticus 19, and of course there are the proscriptions against eating meat with blood in it (my rare steaks), "marring" my beard (shaved it all completely off on New Years Eve - first time with clean face in 12 years) and a host of other items (10 Commandments included) that most of us violate from time to time or even regularly.

Now, I had always considered the itemized scriptural laws to be so-called "Old Covenant," along with rules for circumcision, not eating pork, etc. etc. that were replaced by Jesus and His New Covenant to us when they executed Him.

So, I am interested in the opinion of my BGP brethren, can I get my little water glass tattoo or should I skip it?

I wonder what your critic would say if you were considering a tattoo of a religious symbol, or some sort of pro-religion text?

Tattoos aren't my thing. I hate them, in fact--with tremendous passion.

But the Bible does not forbid you from getting one. And in my experience, people who try to pull the "but your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit" excuse are often significantly overweight. Somehow, being fat isn't desecrating the temple of the Holy Spirit, but putting ink on your skin is. Go figure.

So get the tattoo if you want. You'll just look like an idiot when you're 80 (kidding...sort of).

Agree. However, not beneficial and sinful are two different animals IMO. For the record, I agree with you. As silly as it may seem, it's one reason I like Dwyane Wade as much as I do.
