January 15, 201016 yr Mrs. Hearsay and I were considering getting small tattoos. I was going to get one of a glass with liquid filled up halfway on my shoulder. Silly little thing that my wife and I can do together, nothing more nothing less. A church member tells me that God forbids tattoos and that if I did so I was sinning and violating scripture. He cited me to Leviticus 19:26. Sure enough, there it is. Of course then I read all of Leviticus 19, and of course there are the proscriptions against eating meat with blood in it (my rare steaks), "marring" my beard (shaved it all completely off on New Years Eve - first time with clean face in 12 years) and a host of other items (10 Commandments included) that most of us violate from time to time or even regularly. Now, I had always considered the itemized scriptural laws to be so-called "Old Covenant," along with rules for circumcision, not eating pork, etc. etc. that were replaced by Jesus and His New Covenant to us when they executed Him. So, I am interested in the opinion of my BGP brethren, can I get my little water glass tattoo or should I skip it?
January 15, 201016 yr I have found you can dig up a bible verse for any arguement and usually on either side. I wouldnt let it bother me since the same book says you are to be put to death if you work on the Sabbath
January 15, 201016 yr I'm certainly not an expert on the Bible by any stretch of the imagination, but I say get the tat. I believe the Good Lord is more concerned about more important aspects of your life than rather or not you have a little water glass inked on your shoulder.
January 16, 201016 yr 1 Samuel 16:7 - "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (NIV)
January 16, 201016 yr We are under the New Law of Jesus, the Old law of Moses has been done away with. In the Old man sacrificed animals for their sins to be forgiven, in the New, the blood of Jesus. Go for it, its not a sin.
January 16, 201016 yr A church member tells me that God forbids tattoos and that if I did so I was sinning and violating scripture. He cited me to Leviticus 19:26. Sure enough, there it is. I have a phrase for people who quote certain scriptures of the Bible to dissuade others from engaging in behavior they believe to be sinful. I call those people "cafeteria style" Christians. I use the term cafeteria style because when you engage in cafeteria style dining you get to pick and choose the items you wish to consume and ignore those you don't. Over the years, I have discovered that most people who quote scripture which condemns behavior they themselves don't engage in, completely ignore other scriptures that would in fact conflict with certain behavior they DO engage in. In other words, get the TAT and drink a toast to it with your wife afterward.:thumb:
January 16, 201016 yr I considered getting "999" tattooed on my bicep until I realized I would never be able to raise my hand without being accused of being a satan worshipper.
January 16, 201016 yr I considered getting "999" tattooed on my bicep until I realized I would never be able to raise my hand without being accused of being a satan worshipper.:laugh: That's funny.

Go for it, its not a sin. Thankfully. The Old Testament is terribly confusing and unjust IMO, but I am only man.
January 16, 201016 yr Seems to go against the 'your body is a temple' saying since you would not graffiti a temple . But I am not sure if that comes from the bible. Go for it.
January 16, 201016 yr Author Seems to go against the 'your body is a temple' saying since you would not graffiti a temple . But I am not sure if that comes from the bible. Go for it. I've considered it. However, would young hang artwork in a temple? Is a tattoo graffiti or is it artwork? Or, much like my particular tattoo, is it in the eye of the beholder?
January 16, 201016 yr I've considered it. However, would young hang artwork in a temple? Is a tattoo graffiti or is it artwork? Or, much like my particular tattoo, is it in the eye of the beholder? My view... Small and tasteful = art. Large and not so tatesful = graffiti.
January 16, 201016 yr My view... Small and tasteful = art. Large and not so tatesful = graffiti. There are exceptions however. Word of caution. If you google "lower back tattoos" it takes a little while to find an acceptable image to post on BGP.
January 17, 201016 yr Get a Bible verse/Cross/Jesus Loves you/ how can that be wrong? SSC, I agree about the Old testament, if someone asked me I ususally tell them read the Gospels first to get an idea about Jesus on earth, and slowly go into the OT with reading Psalms/Proverbs which are really fun books to study...Proverbs speaks about going on top of your roof to get away from a nagging wife.
