Last week I was critical of the Referees at Greenwood and after watching the game last night, the Greenwood officials should be awarded the state tournament. Mason totally dominated the game in the first half to lead 31-14 and there was only two two fouls shots by both teams with neither team getting in the bonus. At halftime, the refs must have changed whistles. In the third quarter alone, Ashland made 12-15 FT and Gilbert, Brad Lang and Setty all went from one foul to four fouls each in about four minutes. The game was called different in the third quarter and then again called differently in the fourth. The Tomcats only shot 2 FT in the fourth qtr as Mason shot 11-12 to seal the game. It was a very wierd game. Mason is now 9 - 2 and won the Ashland Invitational Tournament and has only played one game at the Fieldhouse. :clap::clap::clap:

Sounds like they at least evened it up in the 4th. If it had been like the 3rd Mason probably would not have won.:thumb:

I could be mistaken (surprise), but I thought that they said on the post-game show that the tourney MVP was selected by one person rather than a committee. Does anyone know if this is correct?

 

Maybe they throw all of the Ashland players names in a hat and draw one out?

Funny thing is, there were a couple of folks that may have been as deserving as Skaggs (who by the way played a very nice final game). It also could have gone to either Jake Thelen of Covington Catholic or Joe Billman of Ashland.

Yea, what a joke. To beat it all, the MVP trophy was bigger than the team championship plaque. This kind of puts more of an emphasis on individual accolades than it does on team accomplishments. I would have been embarrassed to carry around that ridiculously large trophy, knowing that my team had lost the game. This is sending the wrong message to these young student athletes.

I didn't get to attend the AIT but listening to the radio last night I heard the MVP award was sponsored by Ledford Family Practice. As most people know Dr.Ledford was the team doctor who passed away Monday. He was very involved in Ashland Athletics and the community as a whole. I don't know who chose the MVP. I believe someone from a team other than the winning team has been chosen before and it wasn't an Ashland player. I don't have the facts on this though. I feel safe in saying that if any Ashland player had won MVP last night no matter how large the trophy was, it would not have been a joke to them. They would have carried it with pride. Congrats to Mason Co on a great win and congrats to Will Skaggs.

Clark County has played a much tougher schedule, including the King of the Bluegrass Tournament. Mason County lost to Highlands when Highlands was missing their two best players.

 

I have no dog in this fight, but I wouldn't say Mason County has shown anything to prove they're the best team in the Region either.

Highlands was not the only team in that game missing players. I think Mason is definitely showing something without Pawsatt and Harris. Mark it down, this team will play 9 possibly 10 deep on the bench if the above mentioned players are back by the post season.

 

Also, Clark has to prove they can finish the deal in March. Something they have only done once in the last two decades.

Looking at the box scores in the paper it appears that Skaggs had a nice tourney. It is odd to see a player from the runnerup win the award but given the circumstances mentioned it is understandable.

 

Hall also had quite a tournament for Glasgow.
