Anyone do much shooting with a .410? I'm thinking about getting one for squirrel hunting in particular. I've never shot .410, and I haven't read much about them. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions??

Funny you ask. I bought a Mossberg .410 over and under for my son. Sweet little shooter he hunts quail with. He now has the same gun in 28ga.. He is very wise with birthday and Christmas presents.:thumb:

....and my brother-in-law and I both bought Remington 1100's. I bought the Sporting 28, and he bought the Sporting .410. Very nice, plus the full array of choke tubes.

.410's and 28's are great guns. I've knocked down more rabbits and quail with my old Stevens .410 than any other gun. Some of that is because it's all I had when I was growing up. I'm not a fan of 12 gauge guns at all except for turkey hunting. Have a Belgium Browning 20 and 16 gauge, and Moss. 12, Savage .270, CVA 50 cal., and a Wolf 50 cal mag. Don't have, but always wanted a Rem. 1100 28 gauge. Bowtech Allegiance with a draw loc. If you can't bow hunt because of age , injury, or disability. I highly recommend a draw loc.

A little noisy for my heighborhood. But .22 shorts work just fine at close range head shots.

 

:thumb:A nice, quiet pellet rifle will also quite well with a well placed between the eyes or just behind the ear. . To me a cat is a worthless animal, imo just glorified sknk.

I have no pproblem with people having them as pets as long as they are responsible, keep the inside and/or don't let them run all over the neighborhood.

My guns have been cut down to the ones that my father passed down to me. I have sold several others that I had bought through the years.

*Savage .22cal rifle, boly action w/ 6round magazine. Used for squirrel hunting, target shooting/"plinking tin cans" and an occaisional cat.

*L.C. Smith 16ga. sidexside double barrel (mod/full) used for squirrel and rabbit hunting. (this is the gun my Dad gave me when I was old enough to carry a gun/hunt)

*.50cal Kentucky long rifle that my Dad built. ( I have never hunted with it, is kept on a single gun rack)

Absolutely priceless. I have both my grandfathers and my dads old guns in my collection. none of them are really worth a lot of money, but I would not take any amount of money for those.

Gotta admit, I'm kind of jealous of you and Oldrambler. I'd give a lot to get my great grandpa's Ithica 16 gauge, made in the late teens or early 20's. It went to my grandpa, and then, unfortunately for me, it went to my uncle - my grandpa's only son. I'd assume it'll end up going to one of my uncle's two boys. It makes perfect sense that my uncle got it and that he'll probably be giving it to one of his sons, but man would I love to get that shotgun - it's the first one I ever shot.

My favorite that is priceless is my Belgium Browning Sweet Sixteen. Made in 1959. It was my Papaw's and was handed down to me. I was once offered $1600 for it. Not for sale was my comment. Haven't shot it in a few years.

I wish I could say that I was excited to get some of the hand me downs from my dad one of these days. But OR can attest to the fact that my dad was a rough son of a gun and every gun he had was abused. Not in the lack of care sense, more of the hunted with it until it was worn out sense. I remember my dad had a Rem 1100 and didn't like the length of the barrel on it and it was cumbersome when grouse hunting. Off to the gunsmith to whack 4 inches off of it, place a white bead at the end and, voila, grouse gun. That thing rattled by the end of it's days, I think he traded it finally for something else. However, the memories of the places and hunts we took together are priceless. Wouldn't trade them for the world.

A gun that I inherited from my grandfather, that I still use rabit hunting reguardless of the other guns I own, is a Winchester model 12 16 guage pump. Its the sweetest gun I have ever carried through the woods.

I to have a model 12 16 gauge pump that was my grandfathers. You are right, they are a great gun. I just never used it much because it was my grandfathers.

I've got a Winchester 20gauge pump I got off my Uncle before he died. It's the by far the best gun I've ever shot.

Thanks, the only one that I have that is worth much of anything in money is the L.C. Smith double, L.C. Smith is no longer in existance, hasn't been for quite a while. With the gun being a 16ga. adds to it as well. (btw, a 16ga. is by far my fav gauge to shoot of all shotguns). I would like to have a 28ga., have never owned one.

I agree with you on the guns being priceless. Those are valued in priceless memories of the man that taught me to shoot, hunt & fish and the love of the outdoors/sportsman lifestyle.
