What guns do you hunt with?

Featured Replies

I wish I could say that I was excited to get some of the hand me downs from my dad one of these days. But OR can attest to the fact that my dad was a rough son of a gun and every gun he had was abused. Not in the lack of care sense, more of the hunted with it until it was worn out sense. I remember my dad had a Rem 1100 and didn't like the length of the barrel on it and it was cumbersome when grouse hunting. Off to the gunsmith to whack 4 inches off of it, place a white bead at the end and, voila, grouse gun. That thing rattled by the end of it's days, I think he traded it finally for something else. However, the memories of the places and hunts we took together are priceless. Wouldn't trade them for the world.

I certainly can Doc, I remember the gun he used for grouse. Papa Doc definately got use out of a shotgun, lol. One could look at those scratches, cut places on the stock or barrells as 'character":D. I know the scratches on that old model 11 make that gun more beautiful :thumb:.

BTW, By reading all on your post on this thread one would think that you were found of Remington guns. :idunno:, Just a hunch. :D

I to have a model 12 16 gauge pump that was my grandfathers. You are right, they are a great gun. I just never used it much because it was my grandfathers.

I can understand but you may want to ask yourself if your grandfather would had wanted you to hunt with it. know that I hunted with that L.C. double, especially for squirrels up untill I was disabled and can't get out anymore. Although I did always worry about maybe falling with it and breaking the stock or something like that.

A gun that I inherited from my grandfather, that I still use rabit hunting reguardless of the other guns I own, is a Winchester model 12 16 guage pump. Its the sweetest gun I have ever carried through the woods.
I know what you mean, I love a 16 gauge to hunt with, by far my favorite gauge.

My favorite that is priceless is my Belgium Browning Sweet Sixteen. Made in 1959. It was my Papaw's and was handed down to me. I was once offered $1600 for it. Not for sale was my comment. Haven't shot it in a few years.
I am soooooo jealous, the Sweet 16 Browning A5 is a dream gun of mine. I could have bought some through thee years but just never had the money to spare that it took to buy it. A very good friend of mine has one and I have shot it. I have to say that no other gun I have shot compares to a older model Browning A5.

Gotta admit, I'm kind of jealous of you and Oldrambler. I'd give a lot to get my great grandpa's Ithica 16 gauge, made in the late teens or early 20's. It went to my grandpa, and then, unfortunately for me, it went to my uncle - my grandpa's only son. I'd assume it'll end up going to one of my uncle's two boys. It makes perfect sense that my uncle got it and that he'll probably be giving it to one of his sons, but man would I love to get that shotgun - it's the first one I ever shot.

I know what you mean, thosr kind of guns carry priceless memories. I lknow that mine sure does.

Working on another flintlock with my uncle...this time I get to keep it, haha. He's the pro - he's been building flintlocks for over 30 years, but this is my second time helping, so I'm starting to learn more, and I've done much much more work on this one than the last.

It's a Woodbury School style, a good and hard maple stock with medium figuring. Aside from drilling the hole for the ramrod, all work has been done by hand - drawknives, spokeshaves, chisels and scrapers. It has a .45 caliber, double-swamped barrel and a Siler Ketland-style lock. It's going to be mounted with iron hardware, with a hand forged butt-plate and trigger guard. I'm currently working on the triggers and on inletting the trigger guard. We're still trying to figure out what we're going to do for the patch-box, and we still have all the engraving and detail carving to do, but barring any major problems, I should have time enough next summer for some target practice in so I'm nice and comfortable with it for muzzle loader season next year.

Haven't had much time to work on the rifle as of late...I've been covering projects for a co-worker who's taking care of his very ill wife.

I have been practicing a little bit of engraving and detail carving at home on scraps though, and I've made it over to my uncle's a few times in the last month to put in a little work time. We have the butt-plate fitted and in place now, as well as all of the trigger guard and the trigger assembly. We had some family Christmas festivities at my uncle's place on Saturday, too, so we got a little bit of a start on the patchbox. It got me all excited again. I snapped a few shots on my sister-in-law's camera, so we'll see how they turned out, and I might post a few.

Haven't done much work to the barrel and forestock in the past few months. But here are the newly made & inletted trigger guard and trigger assembly - all hand forged. You can see a little bit of the butt plate in the second photo. It's hand forged as well.

It's funny...I actually bought this piece of curly maple because it was "light" on figuring and I thought that would look a little more appropriate for an iron-mounted rifle. The flash from the camera really makes the figuring pop though. I guess I'll have to see how much it shows through in the end once it's stained and finished.

(These three pictures aren't the best, but they were the only ones that turned out and showed any kind of detail.)

The top four pictures have all been posted above...thought I'd just re-embed the shots. Then the bottom is the latest and greatest. Finally in the finish stages of making the rifle. The lock and furniture has all been engraved, the wood is carved, and blueing wood finishing is being done.

I don't see why that couldn't be arranged.

When I was a kid my parents would take my friends and I to Friendship IN for the primitive days festival and we would watch the long rifle craftsmen build and target shoot.

That's a good looking flintlock rifle CWB...nice work! :thumb:

Essentially at completion right now. Needs some tweaks to the trigger pull, and we need to knap a flint for it so we can get the touch hole from the pan to the main-charge just right, and we need to go pick out a nice piece of hickory for the ramrod...and then it's time to make the lead fly.

I wish the picture of the patch box cover was a little clearer - it has a goldenrod engraved into it.

Missed responding to this earlier. My uncle has been a member of the National Muzzle Loading Longrifle Association for as long as I've been alive (as well as a member of the Kentucky Corps of Longriflemen). Friendship, IN is the national headquarters for the NMLRA and members are welcome to shoot any time there on their grounds, but they have a large organized shoot twice a year: their "Spring Shoot" is held beginning the second Saturday in June each year, and their National Championship Shoot is held beginning the second Saturday in September each year. He actually spent a couple of years in charge of Gunmakers Hall about 15 years ago..that's kind of the NMLRA's "everyman's intro to longrifle gunsmithing" shop.

( @spindoc ...if you're not familiar, the Friendship shoots seem like the kind of place that would be WELL worth the 1 hour and 45 minute drive from Louisville.)

Well after several scheduling conflicts, we're FINALLY going to go sight it in tomorrow. Hopefully I can figure out how to get a video of the first shot in here...

When I'm deer hunting, depending on if I'm in my blind or in a holler I use either my Winchester 30-06 with Nikon scope or a Winchester 30-30. Turkey hunting I've got my Remington 12 gauge w/ modified choke and squirrel and rabbit get my Winchester .410 shotgun.
